This is a full-time, benefits eligible, at will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational needs.

The Director of Development is a mid-level fundraising professional responsible for raising gifts to support the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts and for University Initiatives ($100,000+), and reports to the Associate Vice President of Development, University Development. The Director is a member of the university’s development team. He/she is responsible for implementing short- and long-term fundraising goals as part of the Campaign development plan and is responsible for securing private voluntary support from individuals, corporate and foundation donors to the University.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of five or more years’ experience in major gifts fund raising.
  • Success in major gifts fund raising ($100,000+) that demonstrates ability to align strategy development/implementation with pre-approved goals/priorities.

Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills

  • Fund-raising experience in a large, complex university.
  • Demonstrated success with comprehensive and/or capital campaigns.
  • Appropriate advanced degree.
  • Planned giving experience.
  • Demonstrated transferable skills are considered.
  • Proven experience in all facets of development including: gift administration, gift acceptance, prospect management, research, annual giving, volunteer management and communications.
  • Demonstrated success as a development professional in a donor-centered fund-raising environment.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment of change.
  • Demonstrated ability to make complex decisions, problem-solve and serve as an effective team member.
  • Demonstrated success in providing volunteer leadership.
  • A high degree of commitment to higher education and philanthropy.
  • Ability to handle competing priorities in a complex development environment.
  • Ability to represent SDSU and University Development in a positive manner on campus and with external constituencies.
  • Must have the ability to travel and attend off-campus appointments and events.
  • May on occasion be required to attend events or perform duties outside of normal work hours.
