JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) invites applications for the position of Professor and Department Head in the Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (or a closely related field) and proven accomplishments in engineering leadership, including a recognized record of scholarship with externally funded research and journal publications, and a commitment to high-quality teaching in civil and environmental engineering. Evidence of successful collaboration in multi-disciplinary teams is highly encouraged. The selected candidate is expected to support the teaching, project advising and research mission of the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department, as well as render service to the profession and the university.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department at WPI has an ABET accredited program with 17 full-time faculty members and offers undergraduate degrees in civil engineering, environmental engineering and architectural engineering to 300 students. The department offers graduate degrees in civil and environmental engineering to 80 graduate students. (http://www.wpi.edu/academics/cee/)

The candidate must demonstrate outstanding leadership, management and mentoring ability and a clear vision for the future of the department. The new Head will be expected to build upon the department’s recognized strengths, recruit outstanding faculty, promote scholarly initiatives, facilitate internal and external research collaborations and oversee curriculum changes. Furthermore they must be able to foster corporate relations, promote new funding opportunities through research and advancement, steer the department through an exciting period of growth and change in the field and lead the department to its next level of excellence and visibility.

Required qualifications for the position include: an earned doctorate in engineering or physical science related to civil and environmental engineering, demonstrated excellence in teaching, an international reputation with a distinguished record in scholarship and funding, academic credentials appropriate for appointment as a full, tenured Professor at WPI, with administrative experience.
