The* School of Biological Sciences* at Washington State University, Pullman, Washington, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Plant Community Ecology to begin August 16, 2019. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an internationally recognized, externally funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and participate in service.
Candidates should have a research program focused on plant community ecology, potential for collaborative research and training, and the ability to complement our faculty’s strengths in ecology, organismal and evolutionary biology, population and ecological genetics, systematics, physiology, and development. Applicants must show potential for outstanding teaching and are expected to develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program in plant community ecology.

Area of expertise is open. The ideal candidate will use modern approaches to address pressing contemporary and future issues in plant community ecology.

This is a permanent, full-time (academic year), tenure-track position with an appointment at the Assistant Professor level. Salary is competitive and commensurate with training and experience.

Additional Information

The School of Biological Sciences is part of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Pullman faculty are housed in three interconnected buildings. Within the complex are research and teaching labs, the Marion Ownbey Herbarium, controlled-environment plant growth facilities, a rooftop greenhouse, the WSU Stable Isotope Core Lab, the Franceschi Electron Microscopy and Imaging Center, animal care facilities, the Charles R. Conner Museum of Natural History, and other support facilities. The School also manages the George Hudson Biological Reserve at Smoot Hill, a Palouse prairie remnant for field research and conservation. Other natural areas are regionally available. Opportunities to interact with scientists in other academic units at WSU-Pullman are extensive, as are opportunities to interact with faculty at other campuses of Washington State University (e.g. WSU-Vancouver and WSU-Tri-Cities). Close collaborations also exist with biologists at the University of Idaho, a land grant research university with 11,500 students located eight miles away.

Washington State University is a land grant, comprehensive research institution with an enrollment of approximately 20,000 students on the Pullman campus. There are 11 colleges offering doctoral degrees in 42 disciplines; master’s and bachelor’s degrees are offered in more areas of study. Additional campuses are located in four urban communities across the state. WSU is one of the largest residential universities in the West. Pullman provides a friendly, small-town living environment.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
