Job Details
The Assistant Professor/Extension Agronomist will develop a nationally recognized, integrated research and extension program in the area of cropping systems improvement and crop performance assessment. The successful candidate must acquire competitive extramural funding from state, regional, and national agencies and agricultural industry stakeholders to support this comprehensive program. The incumbent will disseminate information by publishing results in appropriate peer-reviewed journals and extension media, delivering presentations at scientific conferences and grower meetings, and using other modern communication platforms. This person is expected to work collaboratively with other researchers, the grower community, plant breeders, extension professionals, crop consultants, and other stakeholders. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in basic plant science and cropping systems and the mentoring and supervision of graduate students. Other duties include serving on CSS, CAHNRS and WSU committees. The Extension Agronomist will participate in the successful integration of cereal varieties into cropping systems of eastern Washington through membership in the interdisciplinary Extension Dryland Cropping Systems Team. Applied research and extension emphases for the team include, but are not limited to: high-throughput phenotyping; development and/or application of novel crop health phenotyping techniques; experimental design; varietal response to variable management practices; cropping systems; improved management practices related to weeds, pests, diseases, or abiotic stresses; modeling/prediction of environmental effects on crop performance and/or traits of economic importance; physiological adaptation to variable environments, or; applied quantitative genetics.

Anticipated Start Date 02/01/2019 Tenure Track Yes Full-Time/Part-Time Full Time Appointment Status Permanent Position Term in Months 12 month Monthly Salary Competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience; excellent benefits Required Qualifications~Earned Ph.D. degree in an applied plant science (Agronomy, Weed Science, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, or Plant Breeding) with sufficient depth in the discipline to understand and address dryland crop performance;
~Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical audiences using oral and written forms;
~Experience in field research with a variety of crops, including ability to perform efficient field research (plot establishment, maintenance, data collection, and analysis).
~Demonstrated ability to organize and lead interdisciplinary extension programs;
~Demonstrated knowledge of plant breeding or variety evaluation programs;
~Record of competitive grant success commensurate with career level;
~Demonstrated ability to participate/collaborate in interdisciplinary applied research programs;
~Ability to supervise support staff and students;
~Demonstrated evidence of teaching and student mentoring;
~Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced
Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.
Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
