TTo provide instruction in Health & Human Performance Outdoor Leadership courses including lecture and select learning lab components. Part-time instructors direct student learning, discussions and evaluate student performance in the classroom and during hands-on field sessions.

•This is a part-time (< .50 FTE) non-benefited position, hired on a term-by-term basis. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments.
•Part-Time Faculty compensation begins at Step 1 / $573 per load unit (LU). Load Unit is equivalent to class credit; and shall include both teaching and other assignments.
•Part-Time Faculty positions are not represented by the Faculty Forum Collective Bargaining Agreement.
•Initial assignment will be at the Bend Campus. May include travel throughout the College district.
•Official transcripts are required upon hire. Applicants anticipating Degree completion must supply a letter from his/her university stating the degree title and that the degree will be granted by that date.
•Upon hire, must pass criminal background check and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions:

1.Provide instruction in Outdoor Leadership courses. This includes lecturing and guiding in classroom activities, providing individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and/or evening, and classes taught on or off campus.

2.Office Hours and Student Contact. All instructors are expected to be available to their students outside of class when students are scheduled on campus. There is a minimum of at least one office hour per week for each course taught.

3.Cooperate with other College personnel and Outdoor Leadership faculty to assist students progression of learning.

4.Act as a resource person for students.

5.Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to each location, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individuals must possess knowledge of experiential, adventure, and outdoor education philosophies; general technical and safety skills in the outdoors; and any specific technical skills necessary for specific courses. Outdoor Leadership instructors must be capable of spending extensive time in the backcountry, while providing support and measure of risk management for class groups.

1.Thorough knowledge in the field of Outdoor Education, Adventure Education, or Outdoor Recreation, including demonstrated competency of the following skills: safety, risk management, navigation, wilderness first aid, decision making, weather, instructional, facilitation, effective communication, organization, and professional ethics.

2.Knowledge of teaching and instruction of various audiences and group dynamics.

3.Visual ability, corrected, to enable instructor to observe, direct, and supervise students in classroom and field situations.

4.Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of a variety of technical equipment, including rock gear, mountaineering equipment, Whisperlite stoves, whitewater rafts, etc (depending upon teaching assignment)

5.Ability to carry a pack greater than 50#, over uneven terrain, for more than 3 miles.

6.Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.

7.Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.

8.Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.

9.Ability to work with Outdoor Leadership faculty and other COCC staffs at all levels.

10.Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.

11. Ability/skills to competently advise and/or serve students from a variety of background, respecting cultural and socio-economic differences.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Work is performed in classroom and office environments with the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. The employee is regularly required to use computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary conversations. Computer screen is used frequently. Ability to carry a pack greater than 50#, over uneven terrain, for more than 3 miles.. Travel throughout the College district as needed. A flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the position responsibilities. The employee is required to meet physical and ergonomic requirements of the program area as this may vary from positions. Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Education, Adventure Education, Outdoor Leadership, Experiential Education or a closely related discipline; or a Bachelor’s degree with the acquirement of a professional level certification from a recognized organization, such as the American Mountain Guides Association, the American Canoe Association, the Association for Challenge Course technology, or some other.

2. Evidence of excellence, or promise of excellence, in instruction.

The College recognizes the value of skills and knowledge gained outside of formal higher education and paid employment. Organization

Central Oregon Community College, the oldest two-year college in Oregon, provides comprehensive college services to the residents of its 10,000-square-mile district.

COCC offers two-year associate degrees, transfer/lower division programs, career and technical education degrees and certificates, developmental courses, continuing education and community learning classes, industry-specific training programs, and business management assistance.

The College's main campus is located on the western edge of Bend, a city known for its natural beauty and its proximity to diverse recreational opportunities. The location affords spectacular views of the mountains from nearly every point on the 201-acre campus. The Redmond Campus, located 20 miles north on 25 acres near the Redmond Municipal Airport, offers all of the courses necessary to earn an associate degree. In addition, it is the home of the Manufacturing and Applied Technology Center.

Thanks to a successful 2009 bond measure, COCC has constructed campus facilities in Madras and Prineville, opening the two campuses in 2011. In Bend, new health careers and science centers opened in 2012 as well as a technology center in Redmond.

A branch of Oregon State University is located on the Bend campus. OSU-Cascades offers upper division and graduate programs on the COCC campus.
