The Tulane University School of Architecture is seeking qualified candidates in Urbanism and Urban Design at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This position will contribute to the development of our research agenda in the area of urbanism, while supporting our educational mission in the teaching of design studios and other courses. The selected candidate will integrate her or his expertise within our current Architecture programs (BArch, BSArch, MArchI, and MArchII), as well as reinforce the Master of Sustainable Real Estate Development (MSRED) and Master of Preservation Studies (MPS) programs and contribute to Tulane’s interdisciplinary PhD program City, Culture, and Community (CCC). This position will play a critical role in the definition and development of the pan-university research initiative in urbanism, collaborating with schools and centers at Tulane (including the Bywater Institute, School of Science and Engineering, School of Liberal Arts, among others) and with organizations beyond the university (for example, the Water Institute of the Gulf).

Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Tulane School of Architecture is an innovator in the fields of architecture and the built environment. We work in multiple areas—from material sciences and prototyping to design-build—and at multiple scales—from buildings to neighborhoods, and to large-scale landscapes and urban planning. We are dedicated to collaborating with other schools at Tulane such as Science and Engineering, Liberal Arts, Law, and Public Health.

The Tulane School of Architecture strives to address the numerous challenges associated with living and building in increasingly vulnerable areas. We undertake multidisciplinary research that involves climate change, coastal and riparian crisis, the process of urbanization under these circumstances, and the challenges for social and environmental justice. The city of New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta are our natural domains of research. However, the complicated nature of this region provides us with prototypical conditions for comparative global studies. For this reason, we expect Tulane’s contributions to be of major relevance.

Qualifications:

Successful candidates for this position will have a terminal degree in Architecture [MArch] or the equivalent in related fields and extensive innovative professional experience and/or a post-professional masters or doctorate degree in Urban Design [MAUD/MUD or PhD].

Candidates should exhibit proficiency in urban design and demonstrable commitment to rigorous design research and innovative curricula. Faculty members at Tulane School of Architecture are expected to teach; work with the faculty, the dean, and other departments at Tulane to develop curriculum; contribute to cross-disciplinary research initiatives, and engage in service through a range of academic committees. Furthermore, candidates are expected to vigorously pursue an agenda of high-profile design research, writing, and creative production. Candidates for this position should be accomplished urbanists/urban designers able to teach undergraduate and graduate urban design studios and related seminars, as well as lecture and lab courses focused on urban history/theory, urban and geospatial analysis, smart city and regional urban development, parametric urban design, and/or urban ecology. In addition to a strong background in architecture and urban design, applicants should have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching in the design studio and in seminar and/or lecture/lab courses in their area(s) of expertise.
