Position Summary

The College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University invites applications for the position of Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs to provide strategic leadership, mentorship and direction on all aspects of faculty affairs including recruitment, promotion/tenure and retention of faculty across all appointment tracks. The Associate Dean will lead efforts to develop an intentional culture of safety and support and will help to envision a robust program of faculty development to include formal career mentorship and leadership development. The Associate Dean will also work closely with senior leadership in human resources to develop a cohesive and visible partnership, collaborating especially on matters related to faculty discipline, faculty grievances and conflict resolution. The associate dean also provides education and advice to department leadership on governance issues including drafting and interpretation of governance documents. This senior leader will be part of a team that develops and articulates a vision for all faculty and staff affairs in the college.

Michigan State University, the nation’s original land-grant university, provides a unique environment and wealth of resources including four health colleges (Human, Osteopathic, and Veterinary Medicine and Nursing) primarily located on the East Lansing campus. As a community-based medical school with campuses in seven communities across the state of Michigan, the College of Human Medicine also has six additional community campuses located throughout the state, providing an established network of clinical and research partnerships and collaborations. The Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs will bring strong leadership and innovative ideas to develop programs and activities to meet the professional development needs of the community-based faculty as well as those on the main campus. In addition to a substantial record of faculty mentorship and development, the Associate Dean will have experience with unit or program administration, a strong commitment to increasing diversity of the faculty and promoting an atmosphere of inclusiveness and collegiality.

The Associate Dean position will be a 75-80% appointment in the Dean’s Office and the remaining 20-25% will be in the academic home department (to be determined based upon candidate’s background).

Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate must have a doctoral degree and a record of scholarship that supports appointment as professor with tenure. A substantial record of faculty mentorship and development; experience with unit or program administration and a strong commitment to increasing diversity of the faculty and promoting an atmosphere of inclusiveness and collegiality.
