The School for the Environment in partnership with the Africana Studies Department in the College of Liberal Arts seeks candidates for the position of Assistant Professor of Equitable and Sustainable Development. This fulltime tenure-track position would begin on 9/1/19 and the person would be expected to pursue research, teaching and outreach focused on community-based economic development, urban revitalization within immigrant communities, comparative studies of resident-led planning and development in the U.S. and abroad, and the critical role race, class, and gender play in local economic development at the neighborhood, municipal, and regional scales. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research areas include local Boston African American and/or Afro-Latino communities and are able to teach Africana Studies courses with themes on Black geographies, race and public policy, Black community development, and/or urban segregation and diversity.
The ideal candidate will an earned doctorate in an appropriate field, and have a research program focused on the expanding role community-based development organization are playing in addressing the unintended consequences of intensifying international competition for investment, jobs, and tax revenues. Among the policies issues of greatest interest are: economic dislocation, transnational migration, international remittances, ILO labor standards, informal economies, racial and gender discrimination, and innovative approaches to economic development in immigrant communities, especially cooperative-based business models. The ideal candidate will contribute courses to SFE’s BA in Community Development and MS in Urban and Regional Planning and Community Development Programs as well as CLA’s Africana and Caribbean Studies Program. They will also contribute to the community-based research programs of SFE and CLA by working closely with the Office of University Partnerships on a variety of engaged scholarship initiatives.
