General Summary:

The University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) seeks nominations for and expressions of interest in the position of Vice Chancellor for Technology/CIO.

Reporting directly to the chancellor, and as an integral part of the university’s senior leadership team, the CIO will be charged with developing and implementing a comprehensive campus IT strategy and will provide the leadership necessary to optimize data and information to support the university’s operational and strategic priorities. The incumbent will promote and enable IT services that support innovation and exploration, and balance nimble and agile operations with highly reliable, available and secure capabilities. Working in close partnership with the university system office IT, the CIO will ensure that campus IT operations and strategy fully support the academic and administrative needs of the university.

The CIO will be a thought leader with a holistic approach who values innovation and is able to articulate a clear strategic vision. Possessing a passion for educational and research technology, as well as for administrative effectiveness, the CIO will have a demonstrated track record in navigating a large, complex, organization. Experience in effectively managing a large IT organization within a federated and decentralized structure, especially in a unionized environment, will be an asset. The ability to collaborate and to build bridges and relationships with faculty, administrators, students, and a diverse set of stakeholders is a must. The CIO must have excellent relationship-building skills and a hands-on management style. Respect and advocacy for diversity in all its forms, including diversity of thought and perspective, are essential attributes.

The successful candidate will be an inspiring leader, a dynamic, creative and forceful advocate who is ready to join a team of senior, mission-oriented colleagues. The capacity to understand and embrace the mission, purpose, and culture of a public, urban research university is essential. Budget management and staff oversight in progressively responsible relevant positions is a plus. A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree preferred.

With a growing reputation for innovative research addressing complex urban issues, UMass Boston—metropolitan Boston’s only public research university—offers its diverse student population both an intimate learning environment and the rich experience of a great American city. Located on a breathtakingly beautiful waterfront, only three subway stops from the center of one of the nation’s most prosperous cities, UMass Boston is composed of ten colleges and graduate schools serving a robustly diverse population of roughly 17,000 students. A majority-minority campus, UMB is the most diverse of the five universities in the University of Massachusetts system.

This is a time of unprecedented growth and transformational change for the university. The first residence halls opened in Fall 2018; the student body has grown substantially in the last ten years and several construction projects have added two new academic buildings to the campus’s physical plant. This dynamic environment will continue in the coming years as the university defines its plans for developing the 20+acre Bayside property to further enhance the academic enterprise and support the community of which the university is a part.

Application Instructions:

Credential review will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Nominations, applications, and requests for the full leadership profile may be sent to Andrew Wheeler, Leader, Education, and Nonprofit Practice, and Hugo Fueglein, Managing Director at Diversified Search, the executive search firm assisting UMass Boston with this effort. Electronic submissions that include a resume along with a formal cover letter are required and may be sent to umasscio@divsearch.com.

This is a non-union position.

Salary commensurate with skills and experience.

Working at University of Massachusetts Boston

The University of Massachusetts Boston is nationally recognized as a model of excellence for urban public universities. The scenic waterfront campus is located next to the John F. Kennedy Library, with easy access to downtown Boston.

The second-largest campus in the UMass system, UMass Boston combines a small-college experience with the vast resources of a major research university. With a 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio, students easily interact with professors because most teaching occurs in small class sizes. Ninety-three percent of full-time faculty hold the highest degree in their fields.

UMass Boston’s academic excellence is reflected by a growing student body of nearly 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university’s eight colleges offer more than 100 undergraduate programs and 50 graduate programs. The University Honors Program serves 300 students who thrive on intellectual challenge. Enriched courses probe more deeply into theory or venture further into application.

UMass Boston’s diverse student body provides a global context for student learning, and its location in a major U.S. city provides connections to employers in industries such as finance, health care, technology, service, and education, offering students opportunities to gain valuable in-school experience via internships, clinicals, and other career-related placements.

More than 100 student organizations — including clubs, literary magazines, newspaperradio stationart gallery, and 16 NCAA Division III sports teams — offer a rich campus life. Students live throughout Greater Boston and in apartment communities just steps from the campus, and enjoy the rich amenities, cultural attractions, and educational opportunities that make the city the biggest and best college town in the nation.
