The Department of Languages & Literatures at the University of Denver (DU) is an undergraduate department offering majors in French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish, and minors in those languages plus Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, and Latin, with electives in Arabic and classical Greek. The department currently has 39 full-time faculty (17 tenure-line, 14 teaching-line, and eight visiting teaching faculty). Our Russian program attracts many talented students from a variety of disciplines who frequently opt to complete a double major in Russian and another specialty. It is a program with considerable potential for growth. Position Summary

The Department of Languages and Literatures at the University of Denver invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Russian beginning September 2019. We seek a generalist who can teach a broad range of courses effectively and who is also a productive scholar. We are particularly interested in candidates with a specialization in either the 19th century or the late 20th/early 21st century, as well as a commitment to interdisciplinary perspectives in teaching and scholarship. The successful candidate will promote diversity and Inclusive Excellence through teaching, research and service.

This position will start Sept. 1, 2019.

Essential Functions

  • Teaching load is six classes over three academic quarters.
  • The successful candidate will teach courses at all levels on Russian language, culture and literature as well as supervise independent studies and honors thesis.
  • May also create courses for the common curriculum (in English).
  • Candidates should have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching at the University level.
  • Scholarly potential and an active research agenda are expected. Departmental service is expected, including student advising and participation in program assessment and in extracurricular activities promoting the Russian program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with under-served populations and to work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • The successful candidate will promote diversity and inclusion through teaching and service.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or ABD at the time of application in Russian or a closely related field with a strong Russian component.
    • Applicants that hold an ABD will be considered with the expectation that the dissertation will be finished, and the PhD will be in hand within the first year of appointment. The title of Instructor will be held until all degree requirements are completed.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Russian and English.
  • Record of excellence and success in teaching Russian language to students in the US at the college or university level. Equivalent experience from a college or university outside of the US will also be considered.
  • Experience or evidence of a commitment to incorporate inclusive excellence teaching methods and/or pedagogies to effectively engage broadly diverse student populations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Russian Literature, Slavic Studies, Cultural Studies, or closely related field at time of appointment.
  • Experience in developing curriculum and teaching courses focused on either the 19th century or the late 20th/early 21st century.
  • Interdisciplinary breadth, with interest in including social, political and other cultural contexts in all levels of teaching.
  • Experience in designing courses and in assessing classes and programs.
  • Extended residence and extensive travel in Russia and/or the Commonwealth of Independent States.
