Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence (CLIE) is the student affairs division of the University of Denver. CLIE includes Housing and Residential Education, Academic Resources, Transitions and Access, Health and Counseling, and the Cultural Center.

The Assistant Director, Gender and Sexuality is part of the area Transitions and Access. This area is the centralized hub for student resources and activities at the University of Denver. It encompasses:

  • Fraternity and Sorority Life
  • Orientation
  • Center Cultural and Spiritual Life
  • First Generation Initiatives
  • Veterans Services

Each of these offices supports the student experience by providing unique programs, services and facilities designed to foster student development and help students find their passion and purpose. This position will require some evenings, weekends and holiday.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director is a member of the Cultural Center team and will assist in providing leadership for initiatives and support services that enhance the student experience and promote the personal development and academic success of undergraduate lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual students at the University of Denver. While the position prioritizes work with students, the Coordinator also supports and advocates for LGBTQIA staff and faculty.

Under the general direction of the Director of Cultural and Spiritual Life, the Assistant Director, Gender and Sexuality will collaborate with other offices to develop programs that enhance the quality of student-life, promote diversity and inclusion, and respond to student concerns. The Assistant Director, Gender and Sexuality is an advocate for the University of Denver LGBTQIA community and will contribute to efforts to promote the development of cultural competence on the part of members of the campus community. The Assistant Director is expected to be available to work outside of regular business hours, for evening and weekend events, or other critical times.

Essential Functions

  • Create a safe environment in which to serve as a referral source and provide consultation as needed to students regarding LGBTQIA topics and/or issues.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student staff working with LGBTQIA student initiatives, support programming efforts and manage the Pride Lounge Resource Center; work with students on budget management.
  • Recommend and participate in the development of college policies and procedures for LGBTQIA students.
  • Provide education and training as needed (Queer and Ally Training, departmental sensitivity, etc.).
  • Provide support and collaborate with student-run organizations working on issues of gender, consent, sexuality, and sexual violence by attending meetings and programs presented by the groups, and by guiding groups through the event planning and implementation process.
  • Build strategic and collaborative partnerships with college departments and programs in support of students in issues related to gender, sexual orientation, sexuality (including Housing and Residential Education, Health and Counseling Center, Human Resources and Inclusive Community, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Campus Safety etc).
  • Participate in professional development and growth opportunities in order to maintain current knowledge of student development and student learning research, theory and practice that best serve the needs of LGBTQIA students.
  • Ensure that the college is listed and participating in national groups and organizations for LGBTQIA resources.
  • Participate in community-based groups/programs who are doing work in related areas.
  • Assist with alumni relations within the LGBTQIA community.
  • Assist with ongoing department learning outcomes development and assessment processes; incorporate learning outcomes into department trainings, resources, and advising.
  • Assist as needed in planning and implementing Cultural Center events
  • Serve on college committees as needed, as well as complete other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and understanding of identities, issues, and research related to LGBTQIA students in higher education.
  • Familiarity with contemporary college student issues, especially those related to gender, sexuality, gender identity, and the intersectionality with other identities.
  • Comfortable with consulting current literature to develop evidence-based practice to support LGBTQIA students and promote inclusive excellence.
  • Familiar with and committed to ongoing learning about the evolving landscape of student’s gender and sexual identities.
  • Experience with assessment and learning outcomes development.
  • Demonstrated experience advising student organizations and providing individual students with academic, personal, social, and cultural advising.
  • Experience with facilitation and dialogue of complex issues regarding inclusion and equity.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of 2 years of direct program experience in the area of student success, academic engagement, and leadership development. This must include combined experience in the areas of college success for LGBTQIA and other historically underrepresented student populations. Experience in these areas must have been gained on a college or university campus.
  • A demonstrated commitment and understanding of Inclusive Excellence including its impact, implementation, and relevance on a college or university campus. In depth awareness and knowledge of trends in education that impact LGBTQIA and other historically underrepresented communities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, counseling or similarly related field.
  • 3+ years of administrative and direct program experience in the area of successful college transitions. This includes experience in the areas of college success for LGBTQIA and other historically underrepresented students and their families. Experience in these areas must have been gained on a college, university campus.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm including some evenings, weekends and holidays.
