Stanford Medicine, which comprises Stanford University Medical School - a premier research-intensive medical school - and Stanford Health Care - nationally recognized for quality patient care and leading-edge technology - seeks experienced candidates for its Director, Annual Giving position. If you are someone who understands data segmentation and annual giving in the hospital context, including acquisition strategies for grateful patient and community populations, as well as medical alumni fundraising, then this position is for you. You will be responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction and management of the execution of a comprehensive annual giving program. The goals of the annual giving program are to provide a strong financial base for the Medical Center and Stanford University through building a pipeline of major and principal gift donors, along with necessary unrestricted support, through the acquisition of new donors and retention and upgrading of existing donors. This is accomplished via three main annual funds in Stanford Medicine: the Cancer Discovery Fund, Health Care Partners, and the Med Fund. Annual Giving raises approximately $3M annually.
You will oversee fundraising for limited, department-based “sub-funds” which support key priorities including Cancer and Cardio. You will serve as a leader within Medical Center Development, overseeing a team of two direct reports, working closely with a centralized direct marketing team, and collaborating regularly with other members of the team including major and principal gifts, stewardship, alumni relations, development communications and events.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Being responsible for and overseeing three annual giving programs: the Cancer Discovery Fund, Health Care Partners fund, and the Med Fund. Programs include stewardship, direct mail and e-mail solicitations, an alumni reunion effort, and partnering with volunteer leadership.
- Being responsible for and overseeing direct mail/email efforts to renew restricted gifts at the leadership level (typically ~$1,000 to $10,000).
- Overseeing stewardship efforts, including acknowledgement cards and letters, thank you calls and e-stewardship to thank donors and increase retention rates.
- Establishing and executing an annual plan with strategies, tactics, measurable goals and timelines which are integrally linked to the overall department goals. In creating the plan, working collaboratively with peers to help ensure that planning is integrated across audiences. Communicating the plan to supervisor and across organization and report monthly on progress toward goals.
- Tracking progress to goals at an individual project and broader program level, using data analysis, peer benchmarking, market research, and internal best practices to make adjustments to annual plan throughout the year
- Managing, motivating, assisting and evaluating annual team members, working with the team to maximize individual, program and department goals by providing oversight, guidance, strategic advice, training and mentorship.
- Interacting with key volunteers, board members, hospital and medical school administration leaders, leadership donors, alumni, Development Office managers, and senior staff.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:
- A Bachelor's degree and five years of experience in fundraising, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience with fundraising in a medical center or higher education environment.
- Proven record of accomplishment that demonstrates initiative, creativity, transparency, managerial and interpersonal skills. Well-developed leadership abilities and a willingness to take risks and solve problems creatively.
- A demonstrated ability to manage, organize, motivate, and delegate to others. Ability to address performance issues as they arise.
- An ability to articulate a compelling case for discretionary annual giving in a complex internal and external fundraising environment.
- Strong experience in analyzing and interpreting data to drive strategies and the ability to conceptualize, develop, implement and assess strategic development activities.
- The ability to build effective long-term relationships both internally and externally and the ability to articulate and advocate for institutional goals clearly.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the proven ability to collaborate, build team spirit, and achieve results within a diverse population that may possess competing interests, opinions, and/or expectations.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class license.
- Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks; frequently sitting; frequently use a telephone.
- Occasionally stand/walk, light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.
