Job Description:

Apply student development philosophy and theory to provide comprehensive counseling services regarding degree and vocational education program planning, career decisions, goal clarification and personal life management to EOPS students from diverse backgrounds.

Counsel EOPS students regarding choice of transfer institutions and requirements for programs at other colleges or universities.

Counsel EOPS students regarding career choices, goal setting and decision making to determine academic focus.

Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.

Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.

Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African American. Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other disproportionately impacted students.

Work cooperatively with staff and students.

Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or and career development,


The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee


(1) Have completed a minimum of nine (9) semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages


(2) Have completed six (6) semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages


Two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages.

Desirable Qualifications:
Demonstrated EOPS counseling experience in a part-time or full-time capacity.

Experience in post-secondary career and transfer counseling, specifically, using career assessment tools.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience of career development assessments for helping students determine their major paths.

Experience using electronic student education plans, course placements, student information systems, and internet for academic and career planning.

Two Years of Counseling and teaching experience in a post-secondary setting.

Experience working with California community college student support services programs including, but not limited to, Financial Aid, DSS, CalWORKS, EOPS,CARE, Assessment, Veterans, Foster Youth.

Experience fostering and maintaining collaborative relationships with K-12 schools, community organizations, and post-secondary institutions.

Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, which, foster positive relationships with staff and students.

Bilingual (English/Spanish; English/Vietnamese).

Demonstrated commitment to working with culturally and ethnically diverse students and addressing equity gaps to create success for all students.

Demonstrates competence in providing counseling services as evidenced by appropriate guidance to students’ career, academic, financial, psychological, and social/personal goals.

Experience developing comprehensive student educational program plans (SEPP) in accordance with Title 5 regulations, section 56236 including but not limited to general education requirements, IGETC, CSU, and private university transfer requirements.

Knowledge of curriculum development, Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), the program review report and cycle, and Advisory Committee title 5, section 56208.

Working Conditions:

Salary Range: $70,768 - $107,142 Annually

Special Instructions Summary: Initial salary placement will be determined by the Office of Human Resources in accordance with the faculty collective bargaining agreement and is not negotiable.
