Position: Vice President for Finance and Operations Location: Wheaton, IL
Job Id: 312 # of Openings: 1 Vice President for Finance and OperationsSummaryReporting to the President, the Vice President for Finance and Operations manages the finance, operations and business affairs of the College. The Vice President promotes the short and long-term fiscal health of the College, oversees the legal and business practices of the College, and guides budget decisions that support the College’s strategic priorities. As a member of the President’s Senior Administrative Cabinet, the Vice President works closely with the Board of Trustees and serves as Treasurer of Wheaton College.Responsibilities
  • Oversees the following functions by leading a team of strong managers:
    • Finance, budgeting, procurement, accounting and auditing
    • Endowments, trusts and investments
    • Facility management, campus planning and facility development
    • Auxiliary enterprises, including housing, dining, bookstore and conference services
    • Academic and institutional technology
    • Human resources, payroll and benefits
    • Legal affairs
  • Oversees all phases of the finance and budgeting of the College and its various entities, including the Wheaton College Trust Company
  • Collaborates with Enrollment Management and Academic Affairs for strategic pricing of graduate and undergraduate tuition and financial aid
  • Manages and reviews the investment of the endowment, annuity, pooled income, trust, and other funds subject to the guidelines and limitations prescribed by the President and the Board of Trustees
  • Promotes effective processes to clarify College priorities, allocating resources in collaboration
    with the Senior Administrative Cabinet
  • Develops one- and five-year financial plans, updated annually, and supports strategic planning in each division of the College
  • Promotes efficient business processes and policies that support sustainability
  • Remains informed regarding critical issues in higher education, including funding models
  • Coordinates the College’s internal and outside legal counsel
  • Provides informative, transparent financial reports and presentations that foster community and helps the campus understand the financial position and resource priorities of the College
  • Performs the responsibilities of the Treasurer of the College as defined in the College’s ByLaws
  • Serves as the primary administrative resource for the Finance, Audit, Building and Facilities, Compensation, and Investment Committees of the Board of Trustees
  • Coordinates assigned corporate responsibilities on behalf of the President and the Board of Trustees
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications
  • Proven leader with a record of accomplishment in empowering professional managers to achieve strong operational and financial performance
  • Initiative, discretion, and sound judgment for innovation, decision-making, and strategic planning; able to analyze situations accurately and solve problems or take effective action as needed
  • Able to lead and manage small and large teams as well as manage complex functions demonstrated in an organization of comparable scope
  • Able to establish and maintain collegial, respectful, collaborative relationships with a wide range of internal and external constituents, including administrators, faculty, staff, board members and alumni
  • Exceptional aptitude for financial management, accounting, auditing and analytics; understands financial complexities and manages budgets on sound principles
  • Demonstrated strength in written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in promoting a diverse workforce
  • Minimum of twenty years of progressively more responsible experience in finance and operational management, preferably in higher education
  • Experience with investments, real estate, and technology preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant strongly preferred; Master’s Degree in Business Administration in a related field may qualify
