The ideal candidate will share Reedley College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. As of the 2017-2018 academic year, we currently enroll over 16,000 students of which 71% are Latinx, 6% are Asian/Pacific Islander, 2% are Black/African American, 17% are White, 1% American Indian/Alaska Native, and 2% are multiracial. Reedley College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Under the direction of the Dean of Instruction and Dean of Student Services, the Counselor will provide support for the Title V Ensenamos en el Valle Grant. Ensenamos en el Valle Central will prepare teachers who can serve students in bilingual classrooms in the Central Valley. Fresno State collaborated with its two largest feeder community colleges, Fresno City College and Reedley College to secure a grant to increase the number of credentialed teachers in the region. Fresno City College and Reedley College instituted an Associate Degree for Transfer (“ADT”) for Elementary [K-8] Teachers. The grant is intended to improve greatly the specificity and clarity of these new ADTs, with a focus on effective program planning, content relevance, and student advising. The project will produce tight transfer pathways into Fresno State’s Teacher Education program and implement a purposeful system of student supports along these transfer pathways, starting with recruiting at high schools and ending with bachelor’s degrees and teaching credentials in a range of teaching disciplines. The counselor will mentor from entry to exit Hispanic, low income, and/or first generation students.
Duties of the successful candidate will include student recruitment, scheduling of workshops, matriculation activities, collaborating with faculty and staff regarding program needs, serving on the intercampus advisory committee, work with faculty and staff to ensure program courses and requirements are implemented, and fulfilling other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
This position will have assignments at the Reedley College campus and other State Center Community College District sites. The assignment may include extended days as assigned, including evenings, Saturdays, online, or off-campus sites.
The Counselor will:
- Provide comprehensive counseling services for students including academic, career and personal counseling on an appointment and drop-in basis;
- Provide group counseling sessions, orientations, and workshops;
- Assist students in clarifying their educational goals, selection of courses, and developing student educational plans (SEPs);
- Develop and maintain counseling notes in the college’s electronic record-keeping software, in a timely and effective manner;
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training to stay current with California Community College student success strategies in counseling;
- Active participation in student registration events at local high schools in to assist high school seniors to register for courses and assisting with the development of related advising materials;
- Assist cohort participants and parents in developing appropriate educational plans, with the primary goal of transfer to institutions of higher education in Education fields;
- Collaborate with instructional and counseling faculty and staff from other departments and programs;
- Participate in the implementation of transfer and matriculation activities;
- Interpret and utilize articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students;
- Participate in outreach activities in the community and on campus;
- Utilize and interpret a variety of career tools;
- Teach courses that focus on career and personal development;
- Utilize and keep abreast of advanced counseling methods and student development theories that include integrating technology to support student learning and identification of career objectives;
- Develop and assess course and program level student learning outcomes;
- Participate in program review, curriculum development, and student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
- Serve on college committees, attend division and department meeting activities;
- Participate in setting unit goals and outcome data collection;
- Provide services during days, evenings and weekends; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;
- A valid California Community College Credential;
- The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)Desirable Qualifications
- Bilingual in English and Spanish;
- Experience working with federal grants;
- Experience in working with a cohort;
- Knowledge of low-income and/or potential first generation college bound students in grant funded programs;
- Experience in designing and preparing SEPs for community college students;
- Knowledge of California Community Colleges matriculation process;
- General understanding of Financial Aid Programs including applications and eligibility;
- Experience with technology programs for student services such as: Colleague, SARS-GRID, etc.;
- Knowledge and experience interpreting and utilizing articulation agreements and transfer requirements for community college students;
- Experience in using and interpreting a variety of career assessment tools;
- Experience in developing and presenting counseling related workshops and orientation sessions;
- Experience participating in outreach activities in the community and on campus;
- Experience providing counseling and follow-up services to students on probation or academic dismissal status;
- Ability to connect students with on/off campus resources to assist them in their college life management;
- Ability to use a broad range of technology pertaining to data collection and analysis for student success;
- Ability to work closely with faculty in academic divisions and engage in collegial dialogue on issues of student success;
- Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
- Willingness to examine and remediate one’s relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
- Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity;
- Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
- Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.
Salary is $55,560 – $85,675 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,082 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.
From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview. Interviews are tentatively scheduled in the month of February.
The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews which are tentatively scheduled late February.
A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
