Description of Basic Functions and Responsibilities

Part-Time position to perform specialized duties in facilitating communication between hearing and hearing-impaired persons through signing, interpreting, transliterating, and oral communication. Tasks include interpreting for academic courses, counseling appointments, and to facilitate services such as enrollment, assessment, financial aid, and orientations. Interpreters communicate frequently with students to ensure understanding of schedules and program services and to assist with a variety of personal and academic concerns. Applicants must be proficient in sign language and have experience working as an interpreter, preferably in educational settings. Willingness to pursue certification is desirable.

SALARY: Interpreter/Transliterator I, Range 34 - $19.69 per hour
Interpreter/Transliterator II, Range 43 - $24.60 per hour
Interpreter/Transliterator III, Range 48 - $27.83 per hour

Experience/Education

QUALIFICATIONS FOR INTERPRETER/TRANSLITERATOR I

EDUCATION:

Equivalent college experience or graduation from an accredited interpreter training program.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of 300 verifiable hours of college lecture experience in academic courses.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR INTERPRETER/TRANSLITERATOR II

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

(A) Completed A.A. degree and/or certificate from an accredited interpreter training

program.

OR

(B) Graduation from a recognized four-year college or university with a major in Deaf

Studies with a concentration in ASL/English Interpreting or a closely related field.

OR

(C) National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf

(RID) or a passing score of 4.0 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

A minimum of 2+ years interpreting experience in a post-secondary setting as confirmed

by reference.

OTHER REQUIRED OR PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

Pursuit of certification such as EIPA, ESSE, NIC, Ed: K-12 if not present.

This job class performs the full range of duties at a high degree of proficiency in the use of American sign language. This job class requires educational certification recognized by the California State Board of Education as creditable. Certification level 4.0 required in either the EIPA or the ESSE certifications.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR INTERPRETER/TRANSLITERATOR III

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

(A) Graduation from a recognized four-year college or university with a major in Deaf

Studies with a concentration in ASL/English Interpreting or a closely related field.

OR

(B) National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf

(RID). Special Note: Certification of Interpretation (CI) or Certificate of Transliteration

(CT) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) will be accepted as qualifying.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

A minimum of 3+ years experience in a post-secondary setting and/or completed degree from an accredited interpreter training program.

OTHER REQUIRED OR PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum of one (1) certification as recognized by the Registry of Interpreters for the

Deaf. Certifications recognized in the following categories or equivalency: National

Interpreter Certification (NIC); Certificate of Interpretation and Certificate of

Transliteration (CI/CT).

This job class performs the full range of duties at a high degree of proficiency in the use of American sign language.
