Knox College invites applications for the position of Director for its Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair Scholars Program), one of the TRIO programs funded by the Department of Education. Knox has had a McNair Scholars Program since 1992. As articulated by the McNair Scholars website:

[The program] is designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. McNair participants are either first-generation college students with financial need, or members of a group that is traditionally underrepresented in graduate education and have demonstrated strong academic potential. The goal of the McNair Scholars Program is to increase graduate degree awards for students from underrepresented segments of society.

At Knox, the McNair Scholars complete rigorous research, engage in academic enrichment programs, receive intensive career education, and are provided resources to help their exploration of and preparation for graduate school. It is our hope that scholars begin graduate studies the fall immediately following their bachelor's degree, persist in graduate studies, and complete a doctoral degree within ten years of bachelor's graduation. Knox students identified as McNair Scholars are high-achieving and successful, with excellent post-graduate opportunities and outcomes.

Specific responsibilities of the director include:

  • advising and mentoring McNair Scholars throughout their participation in the program;
  • oversight of the budget and program records;
  • oversight of the identification, recruitment, and selection processes;
  • preparation of the annual and interim performance reports;
  • leadership in Knox McNair STEM orientation and bridge programs;
  • overall administration and evaluation of the program, personnel, and practices;
  • teach the senior seminar series;
  • supervision of McNair staff (an assistant director and student employees);
  • collaboration with other student support offices;
  • supervision of the faculty McNair Project Seminar Director and collaboration with other program-affiliated faculty.

Qualifications:
Master’s degree required, Ph.D. preferred; a minimum of three years experience working with college students in an academic and/or counseling capacity; success in working effectively with students, faculty, staff, and administration; strong organizational and management skills; strong written and oral communication skills; and critically important, an ability to collaborate with multiple constituents across a college campus.

The Director also must demonstrate competence in supervising and instructing students in undergraduate research activities, and in analyzing and evaluating the quality of undergraduate research. Collaboration with faculty and other offices across campus are key. Most importantly, the Director must show demonstrated success in working with low-income, first-generation, and other underrepresented students to attain their degrees and pursue post-graduate studies.

While the McNair program at Knox is especially interested in success across all disciplines, some experience working with STEM students/disciplines is especially desirable; knowledge of research processes (e.g. both qualitative and quantitative methods; writing and citation in a research context; and more); knowledge of and expertise in TRIO programs; and demonstrated success in using technology to advance the program’s goals.
