WEB OPERATIONS MANAGER
Office of Communications

Full-Time, Exempt, Salaried, Administrative Staff Appointment

The web operations manager, reporting to the director of digital strategy, is responsible for overseeing web-development projects and digital products and services for the Office of Communications. The ideal candidate will make innovative and strategic use of WordPress on Colby’s network of websites, embrace data-driven decision making, and possess initiative to use technology to solve problems and build new tools to enhance the experience of Colby’s audience.

The successful candidate will have experience developing database-driven websites and site-management tools in WordPress, as well as fluency in HTML, CSS, Javascript (React preferred), and PHP. Knowledge of SQL and server/networking technology is highly desirable. The web operations manager will collaborate with designers, content producers, managers, and clients to build and maintain high-quality web products of strategic importance to the College, and serve as a key liaison between the Office of Communications and the Office of Information Technology Services (ITS). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage web-related projects within the Office of Communications
  • Maintain project deadlines and track progress using established tools and methodologies
  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships related to web projects and digital products for the office
  • Develop, document, support, and maintain websites and site-management tools
  • Create and maintain documentation of the website and web tools for users
  • Help to establish and maintain a high level of programming standards and practices
  • Maintain and update legacy code to meet the changing needs of the College
  • Ensure the website is optimized for search engines and meets the highest standards of accessibility
  • Develop procedures for testing and debugging code; work with clients to correct issues as they arise
  • Analyze and report on web traffic statistics
  • Collaborate with communications colleagues, site owners, and others to ensure usefulness, quality, and integrity of projects
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging web development technologies and apply them where appropriate
  • Train clients on use and administration of new web applications or sites
  • Coordinate web infrastructure requirements and resource access with ITS and work closely with ITS to ensure that Colby software development and security standards are met
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience
  • 4+ years of experience in software development and/or information technology
  • Experience building web-based tools and sites in a communications/marketing environment
  • Fluency in HTML, CSS, Javascript (React preferred), and PHP
  • Experience developing and maintaining WordPress themes and plugins
  • Project management experience desired
  • Knowledge of database architecture preferred

  • Ability to work occasional nights/weekends
KEY RELATIONSHIPS:This position has significant interactions with students, faculty, and staff.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:General open office and campus environment. Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is also necessary.
