DUTIES AND REPSONSIBILITIES: The Director of Jazz Studies serves as educational and administrative leader of the jazz studies program and reports to the Chair of the Department of Music along with conducting the University Jazz Ensemble and coordinate jazz combos. Additional teaching responsibilities may include, but are not limited to applied music and or jazz related courses such as jazz history,improvisation, theory and repertoire. The Director of Jazz Studies is expected to fully participate in all departmental advising/mentoring activities, recruitment, promoting the Department within the state, nationally and internationally and must be effective in fulfilling committee service, grantsmanship, and expected to be significantly active in creative and/or research activities consistent with all faculty appointments. The Director of Jazz Studies must plan and execute local, state or national performing and recruitment tours each year andparticipate in professional organizations. In addition, the Director of Jazz Studies is expected to participate fully in departmental, university and community performance obligations consistent with all ensemble conducting appointments.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degreein music required. A doctorate is preferred (or equivalent in professional experience). Preference will be given to candidates with university-level teaching and administrative experience as well as significant professional experience in jazz performanceand on-going creative activity in the jazz area. Candidate should have a strong background in the study, performance and teaching of Jazz music and proven ability in recruiting for, developing, and maintaining a high quality Jazz Studies program. Candidate must have the ability to build and maintain professional relationships and to work collaboratively with public school band programs and the ability to teach, advise and mentor students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
SALARY: Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.
