Description:

The Film and Media Studies Program at Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track moving image production position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 1, 2019. The successful candidate will have teaching and production experience in serial narrative and/or documentary (for those specializing in serial narrative, we are especially interested in experience with subscription streaming content and web series). We welcome secondary specialties in time-based studio art practices, as the position will include occasional cross-listing of courses with Studio Art. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and supporting underrepresented student groups. Faculty from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. MFA or equivalent required by the time of appointment. The successful candidate will have a robust creative portfolio, college-level teaching experience and will be expected to continue to pursue their creative and professional activities.

The successful candidate will teach a range of moving-image production courses from the introductory level to the capstone, with the majority of these courses in Film and Media Studies and some cross-listed with Studio Art. The course load is two classes per semester, as well as advising special studies, honors theses, and advising in the major. Other responsibilities may include organizing a media production internship program/network for our majors, involvement with the Five College Student Film Festival, and programming occasional speakers and events.

Located in Northampton, MA, Smith College is the largest women’s college in the country and is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research across the liberal arts. A faculty of outstanding scholars interact with students in small classes, as advisors, and through student-faculty research projects. The College is a member of the Five College Consortium with Amherst, Hampshire and Mt. Holyoke Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst; Smith faculty regularly welcome students from these other four campuses into their classrooms. Details about the Film and Media Studies Program may be found at https://www.smith.edu/academics/film-media.

Application Instructions:

Submit application at https://apply.interfolio.com/55583 with cover letter, curriculum vitae, three confidential letters of recommendation, and samples of production work (via streaming links). Please include no more than three examples; longer works should indicate (via timecode) short selections for the committee to view. Submit applications by November 2, 2018.

Candidates who are invited to interview via Skype will be asked to submit more materials in advance of that conversation: a statement of teaching philosophy and sample teaching evaluations.
