Position Summary

Pierce College is recruiting to establish a pool of qualified applicants for non-permanent (hourly) Security Guards.

The Pierce College Campus Safety Department has a non-commissioned security force. While department personnel are not armed, the department has a strong working relationship with Lakewood Police & Fire Departments, Puyallup Police & Fire Departments, and Pierce County Emergency Management.

You will discover that every day is different and the lessons you learn increase your value in the organization. You will realize your possibilities along the way. Essential Functions

Under general supervision, the duties of a Security Guard include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Patrol and inspect campus building and grounds to maintain safety and security from fire, theft, illegal entry, property damage or authorized use of buildings.
  • Provide assistance to students, staff, faculty and visitors by giving directions, unlocking rooms, performing vehicle battery jumps/unlocks, and personnel escorts.
  • Direct traffic, issue citations and patrol parking lots on foot and in a vehicle.
  • Compose electronic daily shift report.
  • Compose electronic incident, accident, maintenance and safety reports as required.
  • Assist local law enforcement personnel upon request.
  • Render First Aid as needed.
  • Operate communications equipment.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:Physical ability to perform the essential functions. Work is performed indoors and outdoors and requires the ability to respond quickly to various locations throughout the campus by walking, running, and/or climbing stairs.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Ability and willingness to work days, evenings and/or weekends and holidays.
Special Requirements:
  • The successful candidate must consent to and pass a criminal background and vehicle check after a conditional offer of employment.
  • At the time of hire, possess a current valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Currently hold or be able to obtain CPR & First Aid certification within thirty days of hire.

Terms of Employment:
Positions are located at the Fort Steilacoom campus in Lakewood and Pierce College Puyallup. Applicants must be willing to work days, evenings and/or weekends and holidays. Positions are hourly and will not exceed 80 hours of work per month. All positions may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites. The starting salary is $12.75 per hour with periodic increments to $15.75 per hour.

Pay Increase Schedule: Please note that the starting wage (phase 1 or 2) is dependent upon qualifications.

Step 1 (0-6 Months at Pierce)
Phase 1 - $12.75
Phase 2 - $14.75

Step 2 (7mo-2yrs at Pierce)
Phase 1 - $13.00
Phase 2 - $15.00

Step 3 (2yrs + at Pierce)
Phase 1 - $13.75
Phase 2 - $15.75

Work is performed in an instructional setting and requires the ability to communicate clearly. Work also includes the ability to use a personal computer.
