Position Summary

Nicolet College is establishing a pool of qualified candidates to be considered for future needs in this area.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Risk, Compliance, and Security, the Campus Security Officer is primarily responsible for providing security services to the campus community and general public on campus using the philosophy of community-oriented policing and service. This individual must maintain the highest level of confidentiality at all times.

These are limited temporary positions for individuals who can dedicate approximately 17 hours per week when school is in session. The typical coverage needed is Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Flexibility in scheduling is expected. The days and hours of work are subject to change, and may include Saturdays or Sundays as necessary to meet the needs of the College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Communicate with employees, members of the Emergency Response Team, and local public safety and law enforcement officials (i.e., police, fire, EMS).
  • Take monthly inventory of the equipment in the Campus Security Office and the security vehicle. Replace items as needed.
  • Relay requests for service to the administrative assistant assigned to log information (i.e., escorts, vehicle assistance, reserve parking places for special events).
  • Provide preventative patrol of buildings and campus grounds by using the appropriate means (i.e., walking, using a bicycle, or the criminal justice/security program vehicle) and respond to requests for service.
  • Assist with the comprehensive investigation and document activities and incidents including, but not limited to, thefts, injuries, and accidents.
  • Contact the appropriate individuals (per established protocol) to report disruptive behavior, safety and security concerns, criminal acts, traffic accidents, injuries or campus policy violations.
  • Provide access to buildings, offices and classrooms as needed.
  • Provide traffic control, parking and vehicle assistance.
  • Monitor and enforce parking restrictions.
  • Provide security escorts to students, employees and the public.
  • Conduct routine inspection of all campus AED's, first aid kits, fire extinguishers and other assigned safety equipment. Provide basic first aid.
  • Extinguish small fires by using a fire extinguisher and other appropriate means.
  • Complete required reports and documents.
  • Conduct video and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent required; relevant degree or training preferred.
  • CPR/AED certification or must obtain certification within 3 months of employment required.
  • Valid driver license with no traffic violations within the past year and no convictions related to OWI or reckless driving required.
  • Prior law enforcement, EMT, or corrections training or work experience preferred.
  • General computer skills in Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Successful completion of a background check including criminal history.

  • Possess excellent people skills and high ethical standards, with demonstrated ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to interact and work well with others as part of a team.
  • Ability to work independently and follow directives and policies/procedures.
  • Above average written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to use communication technology such as radio devices, cell phones, and other mass communication technology of the College.
  • Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate course of action.
  • Ability to operate campus vehicles and ride a bicycle during the day and night in congested traffic and unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow.
  • Ability to administer emergency medical aid and lift, drag, and carry people away from dangerous situations and secure and evacuate people from particular areas.
  • Ability to adapt to changing environment/stress, focus attention on task, cope with strong emotions, and respond to the unexpected.

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Exposure to normal office conditions, a variety of classroom and lab equipment, and may be outside in seasonally variable and sometimes extreme weather conditions.
  • Gross motor skills: ability to maintain balance, reach, push, pull, or stabilize and move and/or lift up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Fine motor skills: pick up and grasp small objects, pinch/squeeze or work with fingers, twist/turn objects using hands.
  • Maintain physical endurance including the ability to lift, carry, and drag heavy objects; climb over and pull oneself over obstacles; jump down from elevated surfaces; climb through openings; crawl in confined areas; balance on uneven or narrow surfaces; and use body force to gain entrance through barriers.
  • Maintain mobility: ability to squat, walk and stand for prolonged periods of time, climb stairs, and ride a bicycle.
  • Specific hearing abilities required include hearing normal speaking-level sounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include seeing objects up to 20 inches away, seeing objects up to 20 feet away, using depth perception, and using peripheral vision.

Compensation:
The pay rate is $16 per hour. No benefits are included with this part-time position.
