Position Description:

Fort Hays State University’s Department of Art and Design is seeking applications for the full-time, tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Graphic Design with an emphasis in Digital Media/Motion Graphics beginning Fall 2019 (9-month contract). The Department of Art and Design seeks candidates who are engaged in both experimental explorations of design and practical applications to real-world problems. The ideal candidate will foster growth in the graphic design program and has the ability to adapt to new developments in the field and incorporate them into teaching and practice. The candidate is also expected to provide students with inspiration, leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • All candidates must possess the terminal degree of MFA in Graphic Design or Visual Communication OR must have a minimum of 18 credit hours of graduate coursework completed toward the MFA degree; degree must be completed within a timeline to be determined between the chair and the candidate ;
  • A thorough knowledge of the graphic design field including graphics hardware and software expertise in Macintosh OS;
  • Extensive knowledge of industry standard software, including, but not limited to: the Adobe Creative Suite (After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign);

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in multidisciplinary and collaborative approaches to teaching within integrated and cross-disciplinary media arts programs that include Cinema 4D, digital art, web design, and video.
  • Teaching experience at the college or university level in digital media and/or 3-5 years of professional experience in the field of graphic design with a fluency in digital media.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach Digital Media and other introductory and advanced graphic design courses to meet department needs;
  • Develop curriculum for a degree concentration in motion graphics;
  • Assist in guiding the integration of technology in the graphic design program;
  • Develop and maintain digital equipment and resources;
  • Share in the advising and mentoring of graphic design students;
  • Ability to teach both undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Work with other graphic design faculty to further oversee/develop the curriculum;   
  • Perform departmental and university service and maintain an active scholarly/creative activity agenda: 60% Teaching, 20% Service, and 20% Scholarship/Research;
  • Demonstrate collegiality, professionalism, and a strong commitment to teaching excellence and to the university mission.

The Department of Art and Design at Fort Hays State University is excited to present a new state-of-the-art facility and art gallery opening in Fall 2019. This 47,000+ square foot art facility—along with the newly constructed 8,000+ square foot sculpture facility—will be equipped with the latest technology and innovation in studio and design allowing for future growth and opportunities.

The Department of Art and Design offers a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art, Art Education or Art History and a Bachelor of Fine Arts with five concentrations: Graphic Design, Interior Design, Photography, Studio Art (Drawing, Printmaking, Painting, Sculpture, and Ceramics), and Studio Art with Teacher Certification. Our innovative Master of Fine Arts program allows students to enroll year-round or as low residency in some of the programs. The department also offers a Master of Liberal Studies with a concentration in Art/Art History. In addition, the department offers courses in the general education program including Approaches to Creativity, Fundamentals and Appreciation of Art, and Survey of Art History. Art and Design students at Fort Hays State University are part of a vibrant community of student and faculty artists who enjoy producing their own artwork and collaborating on group projects.
