The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University invites applications for the position of Division Chief of Hospital Medicine in the Department of Medicine. This is a new position created to serve the needs of our patients, learners and communities. The academic hospitalist position will have a faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine and will be responsible for oversight of the Division of Hospital Medicine, primary inpatient duties, resident and student education, and medicine consultation.

Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Represent the Division in coordination with the Department Chair, Hospitalist Teams and Residents.
  • Provide administration and oversight of the Division’s financial operations and budgets.
  • Provide administration and oversight of schedule to ensure adequate provider coverage of medicine inpatients at AU.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in faculty and staff recruitment and support access, equity and diversity.
  • Provide education and training to residents, students, APPs and staff.
  • Provide hospital inpatient care.
  • Provide hospital inpatient consultation.
  • Work collaboratively with emergency medicine, critical care medicine, and surgical specialties to ensure quality and timely transitions of care.
  • Work collaboratively with hospital leadership to maintain and improve quality and safety metrics for inpatients.

The largest department in the Medical College of Georgia, the Department of Medicine is comprised of 10 divisions, includes more than 100 full-time faculty, in excess of 400 part-time faculty, over 60 internal medicine residents, more than 50 subspecialty and research fellows, and numerous postdoctoral fellows. Our faculty provide outstanding primary through quaternary care in general internal medicine and nine subspecialties, including cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology-oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, pulmonary, and rheumatology.

An overriding goal of the department is to provide the highest quality health care and the foundation for lifelong learning and success for trainees and students. The Department strive to continue to improve educational methods and their senior educators are nationally recognized. The training programs are innovative and provide a broad range of opportunities and experiences that can be customized to meet the needs of the individual trainees.

The department is also home to a translational research program that provides opportunities for career development through biomedical research with scientists across the university and resources to initiate collaborative projects.

There also are community outreach opportunities for faculty and trainees through participation in local clinical practices and organizations within the region and beyond, and many faculty hold leadership positions at the local, regional and national levels.

The Hospital Medicine Chief will have leadership and management skills and experience in scholarly work, excellence in teaching, clinical activities and systems of care. The ideal candidate will be a board-certified internal medicine physician at the rank of Assistant Professor or above and have a minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a faculty member. The candidate must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.
