Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Subtropical Plant Pathology Unit of the USDA, Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Horticultural Research Laboratory, Fort Pierce, Florida is the under the direct supervision of the Research Leader (RL) of Plant Pathology to whom the incumbent will report. The RL is responsible for research on etiology, epidemiology, and modeling of host pathogen interaction aimed at improving plant production of a number of agronomic crops. The purpose of the position is to extend the studies on plant-pathogen interactions and epidemiological aimed at developing improved detection and control strategies.
Essential Job Duties: The purpose of this Research Assistant position is to assist the studies on quantitative epidemiological and plant-pathogen interactions aimed at developing improved detection and survey strategies for multiple citrus pests. The Research Assistant is responsible for independently performing statistical analyses of experimental/sampling data using general statistical packages as well as specific software supplied by the lead scientist, tabulation and summarization of statistical output, preparation of graphical presentation of results and aid in preparation of written reports. This position will work in a team environment and independently to develop a model user-friendly front end for deployment to non-epidemiological audiences. This will advance the use of the lab's mathematical algorithms with an emphasis on web/GUI, performs data analysis and data integration, and develops and implements analysis pipelines. It involves managing large volumes of high-throughput experimental data. This will involve using and modifying existing programs written in C, C++, R, Matlab, R, and MySQL, as well as integrating third-party programs as necessary. **This position is located in Fort Pierce, Florida.**
Minimum Education/Experience: Master's degree in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics or computer science or a related field of study. - or - Bachelor's degree in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics or computer science or a related field of study with 3 or more years of relevant experience.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Knowledge of descriptive and inferential statistics, and ability to apply standardized mathematical formulas, principles and methodology to the solution of technological problems. * Proven knowledge of statistical modeling and data mining. * Demonstrated understanding, and proven solution capabilities, of using advanced statistical software, such as, R, SAS or other statistical packages.
