Position Summary:

The Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a tenure-track position in the sociology of contemporary Korea at the assistant professor rank beginning August 2019. Appointment will be 50% in the Department of Sociology and 50% time in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures. Tenure home will reside in the Department of Sociology.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching, research, and service missions of the Department of Sociology and the Department of Asian Languages & Cultures. Teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels required as well as mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. Candidate will be expected to engage in scholarly research in the sociology of contemporary Korea leading to scholarly publication at the national and international levels. University and professional service required as appropriate.

This position is part of a research cluster proposed by the Title VI-funded Center for East Asian Studies for the University's Cluster Hiring Initiative (https://facstaff.provost.wisc.edu/cluster-hiring-initiative/) to enhance cross-disciplinary expertise on contemporary East Asia. Areas of research on contemporary Korea are open, but priority will be given to applicants conducting qualitative research in the areas of gender, sexuality, family, labor, migration, political economy, or environmental issues. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Cluster and with colleagues affiliated with the Center for East Asian Studies. Three candidates will be recruited in this Cluster: 1) Assistant Professor, Sociology of Contemporary Korea [PVL 95849]( this particular search), 2) Assistant Professor, Chinese Politics [PVL#95952] , and 3) Assistant Professor, Educational Policy Studies with a preferred emphasis on Japan and/or China [PVL # TBD].
