Chair and Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
The College of Medicine seeks a dynamic academic and research driven innovative leader to serve as its next Chair for the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry and invites applications for the position. This is a unique opportunity to build upon a strong and diverse foundation to substantially impact the Commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond by advancing scientific knowledge of biological systems in the cause, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Therefore, we desire a visionary Chair with demonstrated leadership abilities and a national reputation in research.
Reporting to the dean of UK College of Medicine, Robert S. DiPaola, MD, the Chair serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the department. The Chair will have the opportunity to significantly enhance the academic and research missions of the department, to build upon its partnerships within UK Healthcare, the University, and with numerous external partners.
The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine was founded in 1960 when the Medical Center first opened. The department changed its name in 1989 to its current one to reflect the changing spectrum of faculty research interests.Currently the research in the department is funded by a wide variety of agencies, including almost $11 million in research awards from the National Institutes of Health, ranking the department as one of the top ten NIH-funded biochemistry departments at public medical schools.
The department consists of 30 outstanding faculty and their exceptional teams of research scientists, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers are key to the department's success. The faculty members are highly collaborative and have a wide array of scientific approaches, which contributes to the exciting research environment. Cutting-edge work in the department includes focus on cancer, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, aging, and neurodegenerative disorders.
The department also houses a vibrant PhD program, which provides a strong foundation in biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology in addition to high quality mentorship and research experiences. Alumni from this department have gone on to positions in a range of scientific areas including academic research and teaching positions, industry positions, government positions, and careers in science policy. The department teaches a large number of undergraduate students in the classroom and in independent research.

Required Related Experience
A successful candidate should be recognized for exceptional accomplishments as a researcher and academician in Biochemistry. Additionally, the candidate will have a strong record of administrative experience as a department chair, division chief or program/center director; and be nationally/internationally recognized for achievement in research, educational, and service pursuits that would warrant appointment as a full professor; demonstrate upward movement in leadership or administrative positions in medical school or academic medical center setting; and have a proven record of recruitment and retention of talented faculty and staff, as well as mentorship of faculty, staff and trainees.
Required License/ Registration/Certification
Qualified candidates should possess the ability to collaborate effectively, the desire to learn and share, and should have people-skills that promote, foster, and facilitate the trust of colleagues, the broader University, and those who might make philanthropic gifts to the University. The Chair should have impeccable integrity, be an effective and able communicator, and have the ability to serve as a listener, decision-maker, humanist, servant leader, and effective advocate for the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry and its faculty.
