Assistant Professor, School of Information Science: Knowledge Organization

Job description



The School of Information Science is currently seeking an Assistant Professor for an academic year appointment, tenure-track position with responsibilities for teaching, advising, maintenance of personal research program, participation in professional activities, and serving on university committees. This faculty appointment will be part of the Library Science master's program as well as the Information Communication Technology (ICT) program offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees, housed in the School of Information Science (http://ci.uky.edu/sis/), in conjunction with other faculties within the College of Communication and Information, a member of the iSchool consortium. Candidates will be expected to teach at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Opportunities exist to work with doctoral students in the College and to shape the evolution of our degree programs.

Teaching and research responsibilities include one or more areas in knowledge organization: information organization, semantic web, linked data, big data, natural language processing, indexing, document description, classification, controlled vocabularies, and information retrieval. Teaching and research responsibilities also include areas related to relevant subject electives in both Library Science and ICT.

The University of Kentucky is the flagship campus in the state, situated in greater Lexington (population 300,000), in the beautiful Bluegrass region of horse farms and rolling hills. Founded in 1865, UK is a public, research-extensive, land grant Institution, ranked among the top U.S. public universities on a number of criteria, with special strength in the health sciences. The School is part of the College of Communication and Information, which includes the Department of Communication, School of Journalism and Telecommunications, Department of Integrated Strategic Communication, and Graduate Program in Communication.

Faculty positions are for nine months with possible opportunities for summer teaching. Salaries are competitive with those in other disciplines, and commensurate with qualifications and level of appointment.
