About the Unit
The Office of the Dean of Students in the College has broad responsibility for the success of all College students. The Dean of Students reports to the Dean of the College. The office consists of Academic Advisers, Senior Advisers, Deans, and Programming staff. The members of the College Programming Office staff are responsible for developing programming and creating class affinity through events such as Orientation and Senior Week. CPO also works closely with Career Advancement and the College Advisers to plan and execute timely career and academic interventions throughout the College student experience. Additionally, CPO develops communications and programs for parents and families of students in the College.

Job Summary:

The Assistant Director of College Programming helps to create a stronger sense of community and affinity to the College and the University throughout the students' college experience. Working closely with CPO leadership, other campus offices, and student planning committees, the Assistant Director leads the development and implementation of parts of various programs and events such as Orientation, Pre-Orientation, Peer Mentoring, Second- and Third-Year Student programming, and Parent & Family programming. In addition, they may be responsible for serving on campus-wide committees and additional projects as assigned.

Responsibilities:

College Programs (75%):
  • Oversee the implementation of parts of one or more of the following: Orientation, Pre-Orientation, Peer Mentoring, Second- and Third-Year Student programming, and Parent & Family programming
  • Coordinate event logistics for assigned programs including event registration, travel arrangements, ordering buses, reserving space, catering, negotiating contracts and purchasing
  • Advise student planning committees on relevant programs
  • Manage event marketing materials; write, edit, and oversee the production and distribution of event publications; work with students and designers to develop and maintain information flow
  • For certain events, recruit, select, and evaluate student staff; develop student leader training; develop student project assignments
  • Manage event budgets and websites
  • Complete project evaluation and program assessment, and track data for each program


Campus Partners (5%):
  • Work closely with various offices on campus including Alumni Relations & Development, Campus & Student Life, Career Advancement, Center for Leadership and Involvement, College Academic Advising Office, College Admissions, College Center for Research and Fellowships, College Dean's Office, Housing & Residence Life, University Community Service Center, Study Abroad, and others to plan and execute programs


Mentor Student Staff (10%):
  • Provide guidance and direction to student staff members' project work and evaluate staff members' performance/provide constructive feedback


College Programming Staff (10%):
  • Serve as a member of the College Programming staff for the planning and development of various office programs and assist with other projects and duties as assigned

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including excellent editing/proofreading ability in English.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree required, liberal arts preferred
  • Master's degree in higher education/college student personnel or related field preferred


Experience: Example below:
  • Minimally 1-2 years professional work experience in higher education preferred.
  • Specialized knowledge of college student development and event planning required


Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Proficiency in Mac and PC environments
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and on-line organizational tools
  • Familiarity with Adobe graphic design/web development environments


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
  • Office environment
  • Some evening and weekend work
  • Fast-paced environment
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to push carts with up to 40 lbs. of material
  • Ability to sit at a computer for 4-6 hours
  • Periodic walking to other campus locations
  • Climbing up to 5 flights of stairs
