About the Unit
In collaboration with the Maternal-Fetal Service, Neonatology runs the University of Chicago Perinatal Network with over 10 affiliated community hospitals. A state-of-the-art facility, the NICU offers critically-ill infants with innovative mode of interventions including ECMO which can be provided for up to three infants at a time with a special group of technicians supplementing our NICU nursing staff; nitric oxide treatment for babies with hypoxic respiratory failure; oscillator support for babies with severe air leak syndrome; in-dwelling gas monitoring to minimize the use of phlebotomy; on demand EEG, and the capability for 24-hour EEG monitoring. This position will provide services at Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Centers (LCMH), a not-for-profit, full service community hospital located in Evergreen Park, Illinois and affiliated with the UC Perinatal Network. LCMH operates 254 staffed beds with 298 licensed beds including a Level IIE special care nursery. The Special Care Nursery cares for babies requiring critical and not so critical care. Comprehensive neonatal service is provided by board certified UC neonatologists who are responsible for obstetric consultation and delivery room management, management of patients in the special care nursery, and consultation service for the regular nursery as well as coordinating transports for those who require higher level care. The Special Care unit is located on the same floor as the Mother/Baby Unit, currently on the 3rd floor of the West Pavilion Building. It has 10 private rooms fully equipped with state of the art equipment. LCMH is a Baby Friendly Hospital.

Job Summary:

The neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) is an advanced practice nurse who provides direct patient care, in collaboration with consulting physician and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems. Responsibilities are as follows:Conduct comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develop patient care plans within clinical nursing practice and medical care protocols. Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, make referrals to other disciplines as indicated, write progress notes; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings; obtain history relevant to patient care, order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the family. Evaluate outcomes of care delivered to patients and initiate changes in the nursing approach accordingly. Participate in development of collaborative practice arrangements. Assume accountability for patient care in making decisions, prescribing appropriate medications as set forth in the delegation of prescriptive authority, prescribing appropriate treatments, delegating tasks, and maintaining a comfortable environment for the patient. Collaborate with and act as liaison among the nurse, patient, family, physician, and community resources for coordination of patient care. Select appropriate communications approach to achieve desired outcomes of patient care. Actively pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development. Identify and participate in quality assurance issues on the unit. May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician. May prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Act as a resource for clinical skills to staff on or off the unit. May participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.   • Demonstrate competence and service as a role model for all clinical practice responsibilities in the NNP job description
  • Provide direct patient care and formulate plan of care in collaboration with physician, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the Credentials Committee
  • Communicate follow-up plan/disposition with the follow-up health care provider
  • Prescribe and evaluate pharmacological therapies according to protocol
  • Attend both high and low risk deliveries as needed
  • Initiate CPR and perform therapeutic techniques to stabilize a compromised infant in the delivery room, NICU, emergency room and referring hospitals as needed
  • Stabilize and transport patients as needed
  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of current professional and legal trends, concepts and issues related to NNP practice
  • Identify educational needs of family members and assist with teaching as appropriate
  • Assure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care
  • Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care
  • Participate in the development, review and evaluation of policies and procedures
  • Participate in developing and implementing QI monitoring
  • Participate in providing in-service and outreach education program
  • Act as resource for clinical skills for staff on or of the unit
  • May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician(s)
  • Serve as preceptor of NNP students
  • Help identify potential areas for nursing research

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing required
  • Completion of approved NNP training required

  • 2 years of clinical experience in neonatal nursing preferred

Licenses and Certifications:
  • NCC certification as a neonatal nurse practitioner required
  • Ability to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse license by start date required
  • Current license as registered nurse required
  • Once licensed, apply for a mid-level practitioner controlled license and DEA number required

Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Proficiency in resuscitation, intubation and line placement preferred
  • Proficiency in the use of computers preferred
  • Proficiency in EPIC preferred
