About the Unit
The Radiation Safety Team works diligently to reduce human exposure to radiation through the proper management and disposal of all radioactive materials utilized in clinical, teaching and research activities at the University of Chicago. Our staff also oversees UChicago's X-ray radiation program and laser safety program.
The Health Physicist will provide support to the University of Chicago's Radiation Safety Program and Laser Safety Program. The primary functions and duties will be in the following areas: radioactive waste management, radiation monitoring program, laboratory surveys, audits, package receipt surveys, radioactive material accountability, emergency response, escort users to secure locations according to internal procedures, coverage for medical procedures involving therapeutic use of radionuclides, laser safety, database entry, ALARA program, radiation safety training, and instrument quality control. Work is supervised and assigned at the task level.
- Assist in the planning, scheduling, and conducting of radiation and contamination surveys in the research/medical center laboratories and other areas where radioactive material is used or stored, including analysis of smears for the measurement of radioactive contamination.
- Assist with patient therapy procedures to ensure all regulatory and safety precautions are being followed, perform patient room setup as necessary to control contamination, conduct patient room decontamination procedures to include the removal of all equipment that contains radioactive contamination and removal of radioactive waste and survey of room for contamination.
- Assist with providing radiation safety precautions to therapy patients and their family for either inpatient or outpatient procedures.
- Conduct daily package receipt surveys and inventory entry in the database system.
- Conduct leak testing and inventory of radioactive sealed sources.
- Assist with the radiation monitoring program to include distribution and return of dosimetry.
- Provide radiation safety training to University and Medical Center staff.
- Assist with implementation of the laser safety program to include classifying laser systems, review of standard operating procedures and conducting laser lab audits.
- Conduct radiation safety surveys and audits of laboratories using radioactive materials or x-ray producing equipment.
- Be part of the emergency response team and carry the on-call pager as part of the response team.
- Conduct instrument calibration and quality control checks.
- Conduct daily waste management duties to include but not limited to the following:
- Preparation of waste containers for laboratory use.
- Deliver empty waste containers to laboratories and pickup full waste containers from the laboratories.
- Assist with the disposal of liquid waste according to the regulations and University procedures.
- Perform area surveys and removable contamination surveys in the waste facility as required.
- Assist with the management of the decay-in-storage waste program from the research and medical laboratories.
- Filing of records, logging of information and data entry into a database as necessary.
- Assist in the preparation of information for waste shipments along with the organization and scheduling of waste shipping dates.
- Assist in the waste inventory maintenance.
- Conduct supply inventory for waste facility.
- Cleaning and maintaining an organized waste facility.
- Comply with biohazard/radiation safety/safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical, biological agents, and/or radioactive materials/sources and attend annual safety/radiation safety training classes, as appropriate.
- Conduct data entry of radiation safety records daily into a database to demonstrate compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Director, Radiation Safety Officer, Assistant Radiation Safety Officer, Laser Safety Officer and Senior Health Physicist.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills including excellence as a team player are required with the ability to do multiple projects and manage deadlines.
- Must communicate effectively with diverse staff, both verbally and in writing. Ability to read and understand regulatory language.
- Requires alertness and attentiveness to details, good decision-making skills, demonstrated capacity and motivation to learn.
- Must be able to thrive in a busy environment, fully committed to supporting the radiation safety and laser safety programs at the University and its Medical Center, and enthusiastic about joining a team dedicated to excellence in service.
- Requires the ability to follow instructions to meet radiation safety objectives.
- Strong math capabilities required.
Education, Experience or Certifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Health Physics with 4 years' experience in Radiation Protection or Bachelor's Degree in related science field with 6 years' experience in Radiation Protection required
- Experience in laser safety program desired.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Eligible to obtain unescorted access to radioactive materials in quantities of concern (This includes an employment background check, and a fingerprint and criminal history check.).
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Requires the ability to walk/travel (approximately 3 miles or more daily) and also requires 20% sitting and 80% standing and walking/traveling.
- Requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Must possess dexterity to maneuver 55 and/or 30 gallon drums with moving equipment (drum dolly, pallet jack, etc.).
- Occasionally pushing, pulling objects weighing 100 lbs. or less.
- Exposure to hazardous conditions within regulatory limits, such as exposure to radiation and radiation producing equipment, chemicals, biological agents, laser, and radioactive waste (mixed waste, low-level radioactive laboratory waste, and biohazardous waste).
