About the Unit
The Office of Shared Research Facilities (OSRF) oversees the core facilities, which make up a pivotal and essential part of the research ecosystem, providing critical resources that enable existing and emerging technologies to facilitate groundbreaking discoveries. OSRF Cores offer expertise in state-of-the-art instrumentation and services as well as experimental design and data analysis to advance research programs across the disciplines. Operated as fee-for-service facilities, OSRF cores are managed in order to best support the University's mission to discover and create new knowledge of living systems. We are driven by the research needs of the faculty.

Job Information

Job Summary:

This position will report directly to the Technical Director of the Functional Genomics Facility with the goal of strengthening the Core mission of the Facility: providing support to University of Chicago Faculty through State-of-the-Art Genomics Services. The current services offered by the Facility are in the areas of Next Generation Sequencing (Illumina / Pacific BioSciences), DNA Micro-Arrays (Illumina / Affymetrix) and Sanger sequencing / genotyping.

Responsibilities:
  • Bench Primary 1: Be part of Facility team that provides single cell sequencing support to clients (currently DROP-SEQ, 10X Genomics and iCell 8cx). Responsibilities include being proficient in using client provided biologicals to perform the single cell experiments as a Facility service in addition to the ability to train selected clients to operate these platforms independently.
  • Bench Primary 2: Be part of the Facility team that performs technically complex Next Generation Sequencing library protocols [(small) RNA-SEQ, Exome-SEQ, Single cell SEQ, more as needed].
  • Bench Secondary 1: Be able to fill in for the Facility team that operates the Illumina and Pacific Biosciences sequencing equipment.
  • Bench Secondary 2: Be able to fill in for the Facility team that performs daily sample QC (Bio-analyzer, Fragment-Analyzer)
  • Admin Primary 1: Be able to recognize abnormal results and design follow-up analysis and / or experiments that will identify the root-cause of the problem (client or Facility caused).
  • Admin Primary 2: Oversee supply ordering for relevant parts of the Facility in combination with overseeing and monitoring / troubleshooting relevant equipment.

  • Demonstrated scientific and technological problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, manage competing deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.


Additional Requirements

Education, Experience and Certifications:

Education:
  • PhD in Biology or another field related to Genomics research is required.


Experience:
  • Ten-plus years of previous molecular biology / cell biology bench work experience required.
  • Aptitude in working with advanced computer systems required.
  • Aptitude in working with advanced instrumentation required.


Technical Knowledge or Skills:
  • Ability to summarize detailed issues in a concise and structured manner.
  • Ability to read and write documents including protocol and SOP's.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions and solve problems in complex situations.
  • Ability to interact with all staff levels in a professional manner while respecting confidentiality.
  • Detailed oriented.
