Reports to Executive Director of Medical Claims and Litigation Works in collaboration with Sr. Project Coordinator & Claims & Litigation Paralegal Assists clinical risk managers and leadership in the systematic reviews of reports, root cause analyses, corrective action plans, peer review, and system feedback regarding events.   Coordinates with Quality/Safety and Patient Experience personnel as needed. Evaluates and analyzes the frequency and cause of patient injuries.   Provides recommendations for basic and complex preventive risk management assessment(s) of processes, procedures, and programs, including development of in-service education and consultation. Consults with administrative leadership and medical and allied health staff regarding clinical issues or concerns arising from ongoing record reviews. Implements proposed corrective action plans and a comprehensive education programs derived from “lessons learned” from treatment, claims, and litigation analysis. Liaises directly with attorneys, paralegals, claims adjusters and underwriters, and other relevant parties. Consults with corporate and defense counsel regarding all clinical aspects of pending professional and hospital liability claims and litigation. Participate in interviews of providers as a result of potential claims. Identifies, organizes and analyzes pertinent medical records. Prepares a chronology, timeline or other summaries of documentation in medical records Conducts medical literature searches and assist in other research Identify applicable standards of care Identify, screen and facilitate review by expert witnesses Educate attorneys and providers regarding relevant medical issues Participate in pre-suit and litigation case management and case strategy discussions Assist outside counsel with clinical preparation for and support during deposition, trial or ADR, as needed  Reports to Executive Directors and Chief Risk Officer and Senior Counsel regarding Quality of Care grievances, potentially compensable events, and analysis of corrective actions. Coordinates discovery requests, interviews, and other litigation support services with legal counsel. Other duties as assigned.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field preferred but not required.

Certification and Licensing:

Current or prior licensure as an RN or other health professional preferred

Current or prior certification as a Legal Nurse Consultant (LNCC) preferred

Experience:

Minimum of 5 years of relevant clinical review experience in a health care setting, with 7-10 years’ experience preferred.

Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an in-house legal department or private law firm involved with medical professional and hospital liability claims & clinical review, with 7 – 10 years’ experience preferred.

Additional experience in other personal injury, product liability, or employee injury legal work is a plus.

Experience with clinical case management, including post-discharge planning and care is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
  • Skill in collecting, organizing and analyzing data
  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office)
