Previous medical/surgical experience preferred.

Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language and medical terminology.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with patients and families, peers, supervisors and other members of the health care team.

Ability to work in stressful situations.

ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES: (Describe job-related characteristics or abilities as they relate to          specific functions of the position.  May include technical expertise, level of critical thinking required, interpersonal skills, sensory requirements, etc.):

The Anesthesia Technician is responsible for the indirect care of patients.  

Hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity is necessary to safely and correctly operate equipment and instruments.   The primary method of communication is through the spoken word however, the ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise manipulate information in a visual, auditory, or written fashion is essential.  The ability to exercise independent judgment and to foster interdisciplinary team collaboration in order to achieve optimal customer satisfaction is necessary.

Technical Duties:  Proficient in math applications and use of spreadsheet    programs; ability to operate word processing equipment; advanced written                   communication skills including grammar, spelling, and punctuation; thorough                    understanding of all regulations regarding personnel practices.

Motor Skills:  Ability to input data to computer.

Interpersonal Skills:  Ability to interact with others in a professional, courteous,                    tactful manner; ability to act as a consultant to management.

Mental Abilities:  Organize and prioritize; analyze situations and develop                    alternatives; analyze data and develop valid conclusions, develop clear, concise    policies, procedures and correspondence; provide clear direction to others;             manage duties in an environment of changing priorities and frequent deadlines.

Sensory Requirements:  Ability to communicate with others via telephone; ability                    to read written documents.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

                                                

Maintenance of stock and ensures availability of anesthesia related cards, equipment and supplies for all surgical cases                                            

Demonstrates ability to anticipate special needs of anesthesiologists and/or surgical procedures to prevent delays by responding in an appropriate and timely manner.                                                                    

Demonstrates ability to function independently in organizing and prioritizing assigned responsibilities on a daily basis as evidenced by coordination of case load and individual anesthesiologist’s request.                     

       4.  Assist anesthesiologist as necessary in all Surgical Service areas.                              

       5. Demonstrates ability to respond calmly and efficiently during a crisis or emergency situation by implementing appropriate interventions as observed by supervisory staff.                                                                    

       6.  Cares for and cleans anesthesia related equipment / supplies according

             To established Sanitation and Infection Control policy and procedures.                                  

       7. Adheres to established disinfection and / or sterilization policies and procedures as evidenced through the proper care and cleaning of appropriate anesthesia equipment.                    

       8.  Initiates and / or assists with cleaning anesthesia machines and carts to facilitate and ensure efficient operating room turnover and productivity.                  

       9. Adheres to established policies and procedures related to Sanitation and Biomedical Waste disposal through implementation of turnover/clean-up responsibilities.                                                                                     

10. Perceives potential problem situations, intervenes, removes and reports

      Defective equipment to supervisory personnel immediately.                                      

11. Monitors preventive maintenance schedule for anesthesia machines and equipment to ensure that biannual checks are performed by contacting appropriate personnel.                                                                        

12. Monitors and maintains appropriate inventory/par level of all anesthesia

      Related supplies and equipment.                                                                             

13.  Maintains professional, interpersonal relationships with physicians, peers and co-workers, as observed by supervisory staff.    

14.  Receptive to constructive guidance and criticism and responds in and appropriate manner as `observed by supervisory personnel.                               

15.  Demonstrates safe and correct restraint procedures according to Hospital policy and procedure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

(Describe significant physical exertion as it relates to specific functions of the position.  May include walking, standing, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, etc.):

The position requires minimal amount of physical work not to exceed 50 pound this work may involve but is not limited to lifting, carrying, pushing, or positioning of objects, pieces of equipment, or patients.  Any work load exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance.  The individual must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, or bend in order to retrieve dropped items, read gauges and meters, or otherwise assess or retrieve information from, at, or above floor level. The individual must be able to maneuver quickly through hospital corridors, stairways, and rooms in response to patient emergencies and case requirements.  In the event of building evacuation, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety.  Interpretation of the environment requires visual and auditory skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Environment

The Anesthesia Technician spends 100% of work hours in an air conditioned environment.  The potential exists for daily exposure to infectious blood, body fluids, and tissues, and to other biohazardous materials such as cleansing agents, anesthetics. Fixatives and bone cement. 

Occupational Safety and/or Health Risks:

(Identify equipment/precautions required to protect the individual  from  occupational hazards and/or health risks described above.):

Personal protective equipment including disposable gloves, gowns, masks, protective eyewear, face shield, one-way valve masks, shoe covers, and aprons are available in the department.  Negative air flow is present in the Operating Rooms; appropriate protective goggles are available for laser use.  A scavenger system for anesthetic waste removal is in place and bi-annual checks are performed.  Protective lead devices are available when x-rays are taken intra-operatively.  Appropriate receptacles are available for disposal of sharp objects and other biohazardous waste.
