The position of Community Health Educator (CHE) is for the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC), Miller School of Medicine. The position is designed to help carry out the Cancer Center’s mission to make meaningful progress towards health equity while advancing the science of health disparity through research, community outreach and training. The CHE will contribute to community-based research initiatives and programs that aim to reduce cancer related health disparities in South Florida. These efforts will be focused on research, the latest cancer information, experience in cancer control, communications, outreach, training, program planning, and evaluation.  The CHE will also play a pivotal role in cultivating relationships between researchers and the community. The position works as the liaison among the researchers, partners, and community to identify areas of need, and develop, adapt, and disseminate health promotion/cancer education materials that are culturally tailored to the specific needs of communities. Community Health Educators will engage in community-based cancer prevention and control research and interventions that aim to reduce disparities cancer rates and outcomes, and that address the diverse racial/ethnic and socio-economic population of South Florida.  Special emphasis on maximizing utilization of state of the art outreach van for research, education, and screening.  

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                                                                  

Maintains daily operations and performs procedures related to new and on-going research projects.  Assists with ordering, purchasing, and maintenance of all required reagents and supplies for activities, and monitors and maintains inventory of supplies and stocks. Assists with the maintenance of institutional protocols, safety records, and standard operating procedures. Performs and assists other research staff with standard community research techniques. Develops, adapts, and implements new procedures. Records, organizes, and writes up results for submission of manuscripts and for scientific presentations. Keeps abreast of latest literature in the field and searches for references to technical problems. Maintains current knowledge of the methods and techniques related to the specific field of research. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Requirements: 
•    Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required
•    At least 2 years’ experience with community research in a health-related field.
•    Experience with use of socio-demographic measures and descriptive health data
•    Knowledge of cancer epidemiology, basic research principles including community-based participatory research, and quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
•    Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of professionals and with the community. 
•    Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
•    Competency in Microsoft Office programs
•    Excellent English skills (both oral and written) required.
•    Bi-lingual English/Creole OR English/Spanish required
•    Driver license and ability to drive large recreational vehicle strongly encouraged
