Job Details
The primary responsibility of a faculty member in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis shall be on good teaching by working with students in classrooms, online, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities—to help the students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become a better person, a better worker, and a better citizen.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will serve the department as a generalist, teaching across the department’s three core historical survey sequences, including Western Civilization, World Civilization, and United States History. The successful candidate will also serve as the Alexandria campus history faculty lead in our virtual learning environment, NOVA Online, and liaison to NOVA’s online instructional design team. The candidate will teach courses in both the virtual and physical classroom environments. Beyond the classroom, the successful candidate will fulfill institutional responsibility and service obligations including student advising, committee service, and service to the discipline, division, campus, college, and community at-large.
Minimum QualificationsMaster’s degree in History or a master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching field (history). Demonstrated teaching ability and ability to use technology effectively in teaching. College-level teaching experience. Ability and willingness to use instructional technologies. Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills. The successful candidate will teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes with the ability to be flexible to work at any of the college’s locations. Successful completion and passing of a criminal background check is required.
Preferred QualificationsA Doctorate in history; several years of teaching experience in a community college; experience teaching and designing online courses; demonstrated leadership abilities; experience working with a diverse population in an urban setting.
