The University of Guam is looking for an individual who is interested in new challenges and opportunities for professional and personal growth. The Division of English and Applied Linguistics (DEAL) is one of four divisions of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and offers the English major with three emphases: Literature, Linguistics/English as a Second Language (ESL), and English for Education. The composition program, which includes English placement testing and the Writing Center, is situated within DEAL.
CHARACTER OF DUTIES:
The Division of English and Applied Linguistics’ faculty teach a number of composition and General Education classes at the University of Guam. In addition, the division has a robust number of English majors. All full-time faculty members are required to carry a 4-course teaching load per semester; however, faculty may apply for a one-course load reduction subject to the approval of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) Dean.
The successful candidate will: (1) Teach twelve (12) contact hours per semester of introductory and advanced Composition courses, English major courses, and/or General Education courses (face to face and/or online); (2) Assist with course and programmatic student-learning outcomes assessment; (3) Participate in and contribute to the division’s curriculum development; (4) Perform university and community service; (5) Assist with coordination and curricular activities in the English for Education emphasis; (6) Advise students; and (7) Maintain a continuous record of professional development or creative/scholarly activity.
Minimum: (1) Eligible candidates must have a Ph.D. from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or foreign equivalent in English or related field at the time of employment. The area of specialization is open—e.g., Composition, Creative and Professional Writing, Literature, etc.; (2) A strong record of university or college teaching experience; (3) Teaching experience with linguistically and culturally diverse, underrepresented, and underprepared students; (4) Evidence of creative/scholarly research; (5) a proven record of collegiality and collaboration with colleagues and students; and (6) Must be willing to teach online.
Preferred: In addition to the minimum qualifications above, the successful candidate will have: (1) Experience teaching composition, creative, and/or technical and business writing; (2) Two (2) or more years full-time teaching experience at the university or college level; (3) Evidence of an active research agenda with products; (4) Evidence of engaged collaborative research with other departments or faculty members; (5) Evidence of using technology in the classroom and successful online teaching; (6) Proven experience in teaching in the Pacific and Asian regions; (7) Goals to develop and engage in community service, research, and publications relevant to Guam and Micronesia; and (8) Experience working with online learning programs.
