The optometrists hired to staff the optical shop might also serve as back-up staff for the county wide, pre-school vision screening project that is operated out of the department through a mobile eye clinic that visits the school districts on a rotational basis. The optometrists hired to staff the optical shop conduct eye exams on patients through appointments and on a walk-in basis. In addition they will see patients referred by the department's Ophthalmic faculty practice and likewise they will refer patients to the Ophthalmology practice when the general eye exam determines that the patient should be seen by a specialist.

They must be familiar and have experience using the standard equipment for eye examinations of adults and children.
