Note: Not all unique aspects of the job are covered by this job description

University Principal Gifts (UPG) is a central fundraising program focused on cultivating long-term, transformational support for Stanford to realize the strategic vision of university leaders.

The Assistant Director, Development Programs, will operate independently in assigned areas to help deepen the engagement of high-capacity prospects, volunteers, and donors, and enhance the capacity of Principal Gifts field officers and program directors for greater strategic focus. Additionally, the assistant director will be responsible for tracking and analyzing program development activities, and reporting on overall results to internal and external constituencies.

Reporting to the Director of Principal Gifts Administration, this position entails working in partnership with gift officers, program directors, and other members of the UPG team, and in close coordination with senior development officers and colleagues across the university.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in developing meaningful cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship touchpoints to engage high-capacity prospects, donors, and volunteers.
  • Conduct informal prospect research, summarize and prepare background information to assist in evaluating prospect potential.
  • Coordinate logistics, preparation, and follow up for events and individual prospect/donor meetings with senior development staff, faculty, and academic leaders.
  • Develop materials (standard and custom) for targeted fundraising campaigns and for prospects, donors, and volunteers, including slide decks, gift opportunities, proposals, reports, and other communications.
  • Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to assess and produce relevant, custom information (reports, charts, graphs. and tables) from structured data sources to advance cultivation, stewardship, and fundraising strategies.
  • Devise methods for identifying data patterns and trends using a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Research, determine and recommend additional data collection and reporting requirements. This will include leading team adoption of next-generation constituent relationship database ("CARD") and contributing to establishment of CARD best practices across University Principal Gifts.
  • Collaborate with technical staff to standardize and systemize routine reports on program activity; develop customized dashboard and analyses to identify strategic opportunities and maximize potential in program and individual prospect portfolios.
  • Build and maintain network of relevant contacts, and stay informed on current university initiatives and activities—particularly the university-wide priorities of the president and provost.
  • May lead, manage and participate in special projects or events.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:
    • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
    • Advanced ability with Microsoft Office suite.
    • Ability to work efficiently, juggle tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines, and achieve goals.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to interact with a wide range of people.
    • Outstanding communication skills and exceptional attention to detail and follow-through.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with both internal and external constituents.
    • Proficiency with database systems. Experience with Stanford University systems, including PostGrads and Oracle Financials, strongly preferred.
    • Strong data analysis skills including experience gathering, organizing and analyzing data and in presenting results in a succinct fashion to key stakeholders.
    • Ability to manage multiple activities in deadline-oriented environment; highly organized, flexible and rigorous attention to detail.
    • Tact, discretion, and experience handling confidential information.
    • Strong client service orientation.
    • Ability to take leadership role on projects and with constituents.
