The Position: Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President and working closely with the new President, the next Dean will have the opportunity to continue the College and University’s tradition of transformational impact on students, their families, and the region. To support that commitment, the Dean holds responsibility for academic quality and for the intellectual and administrative affairs of the College, including faculty recruitment and development, curriculum development, research, external relations, and all measures of student success. S/he will be charged with helping to articulate and implement a shared vision for the College that will support the University’s commitment to teaching excellence and advance its mission to provide rigorous general education; high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs in professional/pre-professional preparation and in the liberal arts and sciences; and integrative real-world experiences, both local and global, for all students. The Dean will provide leadership and effective advocacy for approximately 58 faculty, 1,139 undergraduate, and 145 graduate students in Accounting, Computer Science and Information Systems, Business, Criminal Justice, Economics, Library, Military Science, Recreation Management, Social Work and Counseling (including University Counseling Services), Sport Administration, and Sport and Exercise Psychology.

The Dean will work closely with admissions to assist in furthering enrollment management; recommend the appointment, salary, promotion, and tenure of faculty in accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement policies and procedures; advance the development of faculty to foster excellence in all domains of faculty work, including teaching and research; generate revenue for the College through resource and management, sponsored research, external partnerships, cultivation of alumni and other donors, and other strategies consistent with the University’s mission; lead development of new and revitalized undergraduate and graduate programs that attract students and contribute to workforce demands in the region and the Commonwealth; build relationships with global and community partners that support the College’s teaching, research, and experiential learning initiatives; lead assessment of student learning and College effectiveness; foster a culture and practice of continual improvement; and promote interdisciplinary and inter-college collaborations in research and teaching.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have progressive administrative leadership experience in a complex organization as well as a record of excellence in teaching and research commensurate with the appointment of full professor in a department within the College. S/he will be able to advocate effectively for the College and its programs, promote student success, and cultivate a diverse, inclusive, just, and collegial climate supportive of shared governance and conducive to intellectual vitality and learning. Candidates should have experience in or express knowledge of supporting online education and graduate education. A history of creating and/or supporting innovative and interdisciplinary programming with internal and external partners as well as experience with accreditation will be valuable. A record of success in cultivating external relationships, including alumni and donor relations; experience in a collective bargaining environment; and demonstrated interpersonal skills and communications are preferred. A terminal degree in a profession or one of the disciplines represented in the College, or equivalent related professional experience, is required.
