Job Summary

The department seeks a regular, academic-year faculty position for instructor, (1.0 FTE/full time) to begin August 19, 2019. Renewable, non-tenure track. This position is responsible for mounting departmental theatre productions during the academic year including providing oversight and budgeting of all scenic, lighting, sound, paint, properties and video elements; creating technical drawings; supervising construction; managing production purchases, load-in, and technical rehearsals, maintaining scene shop inventory and equipment; and maintaining department facilities. This position is also responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient operation of the Scene Shop and affiliated work spaces and performance venues. In addition, this position oversees a crew of student practicum volunteers and approximately 25 part-time paid student assistants. This position is also responsible for managing the scheduling, training, and supervision of student shop workers and production crews adhering to industry standards and teaching and modelling safety in all aspects. This position supervises and is supported by a full-time Assistant Technical Director, a part-time Master Electrician and a part-time audio technician.

The Technical Director also participates on department committees.

This position shall possess excellent engineering, drafting, scheduling, communication and organizational skills with proficiency in Computer-Aided Design software (Vectorworks and/or AutoCad), spreadsheets, metal working, carpentry and rigging, and knowledge of scenic painting. Familiarity with ETC consoles, moving and conventional light fixtures, digital and analogue sound mixing consoles, Qlab, Lightwright and video projection equipment is also desired.

Teaching includes four courses per academic year in technical theatre, providing education and training in, but not limited to, stage technologies, prop conceptualization and production, design, drafting, metal working, carpentry, rigging, and other related production areas. Teaching opportunities could broaden to encompass other technical areas per applicant qualifications and interests. This position also serves as an active member of the BFA Design/Technology and Management faculty, providing individual mentorship and career development for BA and BFA students. There is no contracted work during the Summer break, however the Technical Director is responsible for coordinating technical interaction with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival regarding shared resources.

The Department of Theatre & Dance is a lively and active community of approximately 350 students (BA, BFA, MA and PhD degrees in Theatre, MFA in Experience Design and BA, BFA and MFA degrees in Dance). The department is comprised of twenty-four full-time faculty in Theatre & Dance, including seven faculty dedicated to Design/Technology and Management. In addition to this position, the department employs a full-time Faculty Director of Dance Production and a Theatre & Dance Production Coordinator. The department produces approximately 17 theatre and dance productions per academic year in four venues and hosts the Colorado Shakespeare Festival in the summer months.
