Job Summary

The Department of Pediatrics, as part of the University of Colorado Denver l Anschutz Medical Campus has an opening for a full-time Associate Professor/Endowed Chair in Policy, Ethics, and Law. The Endowed Chair in Policy, Ethics, and Law will lead a novel program at the University of Colorado to serve the state, region and nation in developing, testing and disseminating effective legal, ethical and policy approaches to improve care for children.

The position has been endowed by a generous donor who was himself a survivor of childhood abuse. It honors his remarkable legacy and ensures that his lifetime of achievements will continue making the world safer and healthier for children far into the future. The holder of this chair will draw on expertise and resources across CU, including faculty from Children's Hospital of Colorado, the Kempe Center, the Law School at CU Boulder and the Center for Bioethics and Humanities, to build a program with national impact. The person in this position will be responsible for developing annual and long-term strategic plans for the program and for guiding and coordinating with related faculty and programs across the University to effectively implement an agenda of research, teaching, clinical work, public outreach and advocacy.

The person in this position will have major responsibility for the successful pursuit of avenues of collaborative inquiry, including by facilitating the research of others, collaborating with others on studies of shared interest, and undertaking and spearheading research consistent with his or her own expertise. The successful applicant will be expected to build effective collaborations with local organizations including but not limited to organizations such as Kaiser Permanente, Denver Health, the Denver VA, the Center for Improving Value in Health Care and others.

The successful applicant will be an individual with extensive relevant training and experience, as well as a track record of successful work related to child health ethics, law and policy, and the demonstrated ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams. A career focus on issues related to child abuse and neglect is of particular value.

Examples of Work Performed

• Lead program to serve the state, region and nation in developing, testing and disseminating effective legal, ethical and policy approaches to improve care for children

The hiring salary for this position is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

• Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, JD or other)
  
• Minimum 10 years' experience in policy, law, research, teaching, or advocacy related to child health ethics, law and policy
  
• Experience with mentoring, especially of health professional students, trainees or junior faculty
  

Condition of Employment

• Must successfully pass a drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado
  
• Must be willing and able to pass a national criminal background check
  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated broad familiarity with issues and questions in child health ethics and the law
  
• Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, leadership and teamwork skills
  
• Knowledge of legal and/or ethics scholarship related to child health and policy through education, training and experience
  
• Ability to collaborate with constituencies in multiple organizations
  
• A record of peer reviewed academic publications related to child health ethics, law and policy
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Career focus(ed) on legal, ethical and/or policy issues related to child abuse and neglect, including sequelae of adverse childhood experiences
  
• Experience in the ethical conduct of clinical research involving children
  
• Experience with issues and questions in child health ethics and the law
  
• Example topics include but are not limited to: mature minor and emancipation issues; dispute resolution and shared decision making models; patient and family engagement methods; child health equity and disparities; navigating religious/cultural differences and claims; mediation of requests for potentially non-beneficial treatment; presymptomatic genetic testing in children, differences of sex development, issues related to innovative care; and managing adolescent and young adult patients not participating with treatment plans
• Experience in the education of health professional students using team-based learning in inter-professional settings
  
• Record of success in obtaining grants to support research or training related to child health, focusing on ethical, legal and policy issues
