Under the general supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Physical Shops in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Assistant Shop Manager provides advanced technical design and development of state-of-the-art instrumentation for teaching laboratories and faculty research groups.

Responsibilities include consultation with faculty, development of a design approach, machining/fabrication and assembly, and installation and testing of mechanical subsystems for instruments used in teaching and research laboratories and off campus facilities. Incumbent will be responsible for guiding other technicians through the machining process and will participate in the support and maintenance of existing laboratory instruments; maintain and update design documentation files; and supervise and/or perform necessary repairs of laboratory instruments.

The Assistant Manager will also engage directly with students in both one-on-one sessions and training classes. Engage in instrument upgrade activities and oversee the maintenance of adequate inventory of shop supplies and materials. Incumbent will serve as acting shop manager in the absence of the senior superintendent.

Required:

  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, mathematics, and AutoCAD (Computer Aided Design).
  • Experience using AutoCAD to create mechanical drawings and schematics.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret rough sketches or drawings or verbal instructions to design and fabricate precision parts/components.
  • Ability and skill using mechanical shop machines to include milling machines, lathes, drill presses and 2 years of experience using CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) milling machines.
  • Ability and skill in using machine shop hand tools.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact cooperatively and effectively with faculty, staff, students, external collaborators, and commercial vendors.
  • Experience and ability to use welding equipment and appropriate materials.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory and shop safety procedures.
