Under general supervision, to assist in the recreational and learning activities infants, toddler, pre-school, and/or school age children at a campus Children's Center, Child Care Center, or Early Childhood Lab School, and to perform related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assist in planning and coordinating children's programs of activities with the appropriate management and lead staff.

• Direct and assign duties to student and utility assistants, and volunteers.

• Assume responsibilities for groups of infants, toddlers, pre-school, and/or school age children.

• Maintain health and safety standards per OSHA regulations.

• Prepare materials for daily play and basic learning or Children's Center activities.

• Perform light housekeeping and child maintenance duties.

• Participate in staff meetings, program activities, and in-service training; conduct parent conferences.

• Maintain required records on children, to include anecdotal records and written developmental summaries, as appropriate.

• Develop positive relationships with parents and staff.

• May facilitate daily lunch program for children ages three to five years old.

• Perform other related job duties as assigned.


Qualifications and Physical Demands


Knowledge of:

• Basic growth and development of children in the age group of the assigned program; age groups can range from 6 months through 12 years.

• Preschool programs.

• Simple record keeping.

• Appropriate safety precautions and procedures per OSHA regulations.

Ability to:

• Guide small groups of children ages 6 months through 12 years.

• Plan and conduct children's activities.

• Perform light housekeeping and cleaning duties.

• Direct the work of student interns, utility assistants, and volunteers.

• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

• Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

• Possession of a first aid certificate.

• Maintain simple records.


Certificate and License Requirements:

Must have one of the following:

• Twelve postsecondary semester units or equivalent quarter units in early childhood education or child development completed at an accredited or approved college or university, and at least six months of work experience in a licensed day care center or comparable group child care program, or

• At least 6-semester units as described in (a) and agree to be enrolled in at least 2 units each semester until the 12 units requirements are met, or

• Possession of a Children's Center permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Preparation and Licensing.


• Current T. B. test (within 60 days).

• Fingerprint check through appropriate agencies.

• Physical examination.

• Possession of, or eligibility for. a valid standard First Aid Certificate issued by an approved agency (i.e. • American Red Cross, American Heart Association, National Safety Council).

• Possession of, or eligibility for, a Pediatric CPR Certificate.

• Show proof of immunization against influenza, pertussis, and measles.  If a person meets all other requirements for employment but needs additional time to obtain and provide his or her immunization records, the person may be employed conditionally for a maximum of 30 days upon signing and submitting a written statement attesting that he or she has been immunized as required.  A person is exempt from the requirements of immunization against influenza, pertussis, and measles only under any of the following circumstances:

• The person submits a written statement from a licensed physician declaring that because of the persona's physical condition or medical circumstances, immunization s not safe. 

• The person submits a written statement from a licensed physician providing that the person has evidence of current immunity to the diseases described.

• The person submits a written declaration that he or she has declined the influenza vaccination.  This exemption applies only to the influenza vaccine.
