The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at the College of William & Mary invites applications for a tenure-eligible Assistant Professor position in German Studies beginning August 10, 2019. We are seeking a colleague with a commitment to excellence in scholarship and teaching with the ability to attract, motivate, retain, and mentor students. The candidate should be able to teach at all levels from Beginning and/or Intermediate German language courses to more advanced courses in German Literature and Cultural Studies, freshman seminars and interdisciplinary courses in the university’s new COLL curriculum. Teaching load is four courses per year (2-2).
Required QualificationsA Ph.D. is required by time of appointment, August 10, 2019, with specialization in German Language, German Literature or German Cultural Studies. The candidate must have demonstrated excellence in undergraduate Language, Literature and Culture teaching (including German language courses at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum). Native or near-native proficiency in German and English required.
Preferred QualificationsAs the Program in German Studies at William and Mary looks to increase its offerings regarding minorities and minority cultures in the German-speaking world, we are specifically interested in someone with expertise in issues of migration, integration, multiculturalism or intercultural literature and culture. Scholar-teachers working at the intersection of German Studies and ethnicity, diversity and the inclusion of other cultures are particularly welcome to apply. The ability to offer courses that appeal to students in other disciplines and can be cross-listed with other departments and interdisciplinary programs such as History, Women’s Studies, Judaic Studies, European Studies, and Film and Media Studies will also be considered a plus.
