William & Mary seeks an experienced and strategic colleague for the role of Executive Director of William & Mary Foundation Board Operations & Principal Gift Strategy (Executive Director). The Executive Director is primarily responsible for the management of the foundation board as well as advancement strategies for the office of the President and for the Vice President of University Advancement at William & Mary.

In addition to the work with the Foundation Board and the Presidential and Vice Presidential advancement strategies, the Executive Director leads and manages the advancement strategy for all principal gifts to the university, including identification, discovery, and pipeline management. The Executive Director reports to and works closely with the Associate Vice President for Development/ Campaign Director, as the lead architect for the presidential and vice-presidential gift strategy and provides strategic direction for the William & Mary Foundation; the Executive Director supervises one direct report, the Assistant Director, Principal Gifts & Foundation Operations. As part of a collaborative team in university advancement, the Executive Director will serve as the internal resident expert on foundation board management and operations for all of advancement, specifically with regard to board literature, trends, and program development.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with significant and progressively responsible professional experience and specialized expertise directly related to the position.
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices in principal gifts fundraising, stewardship, and development.
  • Experience with nonprofit/foundation best-practices and regulations (typically three to five years).
  • Significant experience with volunteer management (typically over five years).
  • Fundraising experience with a proven track record of identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gifts from individuals.
  • Experience in developing and presenting internal and external presentations and seminars.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of the fundamentals in the laws related to foundation financial systems and board governance
  • Demonstrates a strategic vision to create and manage the William & Mary Foundation board to harness the potential of the larger community toward engagement and philanthropic goals
  • Demonstrates high level organizational skills and an ability to handle multiple and complex tasks and projects concurrently
  • Displays excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree or related professional degree.
  • Significant experience (typically over five years) with governing board development and the principles of laws applicable to board governance.
  • Extensive fundraising experience (typically eight or more years) with a proven track record of identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding principal gifts from individuals is highly preferred.
  • Campaign leadership and gift planning experience within a higher education environment.
  • Management experience at a non- profit organization.
