Assistant/Associate Professor in Marine Chemistry: We invite applications for two tenure-eligible Assistant/Associate Professor positions in the School of Marine Science, VIMS. The positions are anticipated to begin in the fall of 2019.

The School of Marine Science at VIMS is the graduate school in marine science for William & Mary. Chartered in 1940, VIMS is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States. VIMS employs 52 full-time faculty members, 256 staff, and has 80 graduate students in master’s and doctoral programs. There are four academic departments at VIMS: Biological Sciences, Environmental and Aquatic Health Sciences, Fisheries Science, and Physical Sciences. The successful candidate will develop and maintain an active research program that is externally well-funded, teach core and advanced courses, advise students (primarily at the graduate level), participate in university and VIMS/SMS governance, and provide advisory service on related resource management issues to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Candidates who are prepared to engage in cross-disciplinary research consistent with the VIMS mission will be especially welcome.

We anticipate hires in both organic and inorganic chemistry. Departmental affiliation will be determined based on the interests and expertise of the successful applicants. Potential areas of interest include: inorganic and organic geochemistry, biochemistry, molecular and physical exchange processes, and effects of climate change and human activities in coastal and estuarine waters.

Required Qualifications

Education:

Ph.D. or similar terminal degree in Marine Sciences, or a related discipline at the time of appointment.

Competencies and Skills:

  • A strong record of scientific research publications in scholarly journals commensurate with experience and/or years from Ph.D.
  • Demonstrated research interests in coastal and/or estuarine chemistry.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Postdoctoral experience.
  • Experience in mentoring and teaching graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Experience or qualifications for teaching chemical oceanography.
  • Experience generating external-funding for research.
  • Experience translating research results into advice for federal, state and/or local agencies.
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary research.
  • Strong quantitative skills.
  • Experience in collaborative science and potential for team leadership.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Evidence of a high level of interest in and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
