The Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, has an immediate opening for a full-time faculty member in the GI Cancer | Developmental Therapeutics Phase I Clinic and programs in Aurora, Colorado USA.

The University of Colorado Cancer Center is an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center residing in a burgeoning $4 billion campus.

The position will report to and receive supervision from Dr. Christopher Lieu (Director, GI Cancers Program), and Dr. Wells Messersmith (Division Head).

Supervision exercised: This position will be involved in the joint supervision of the GI/Phase I team advanced practice providers, medical oncology fellows, laboratory technicians, and post-doctoral fellows.


The candidate will be expected to participate in and develop novel mechanism-based clinical and translational research. The Gastrointestinal Cancers Program is investigating novel agents and conducting translational research in colorectal, gastroesophageal, pancreatic, hepatocellular, bile duct, anal, and neuroendocrine malignancies. Candidates will also have the opportunity to work with the Developmental Therapeutics/Phase I program which is currently conducting single-agent and combination phase I/II studies using targeted, immunologic, and cytotoxic agents. The University of Colorado Cancer Center provides extensive support including data management, pharmacokinetic assay development and analysis, pathology, and a translational research laboratory for conducting biological correlative assays.

Duties and responsibilities will include direct patient care in the Phase I/GI clinic 4 half-days per week; participation in, and oversight of, Phase I and Phase II clinical trials and inter-institutional Phase III trials; participation in, and oversight of, translational research studies in the division laboratories assigned; preparation and submission of original research manuscripts; application for independent research funding for clinical and laboratory studies; inpatient attending on the Medical Oncology service (2-4 weeks per year, depending on existing coverage); and mentoring of advanced practice providers, medical oncology fellows, and post-doctoral fellows.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.D. from an accredited Institution, or the equivalent with board eligibility in medical oncology and eligible to practice medicine and acquire a medical license in the State of Colorado.
  • The successful candidate will have a Doctorate of Medicine, and be Board Certified for Internal Medicine, and Board Certified or Eligible for Medical Oncology.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The candidate must have excellent clinical skills pertaining to medical oncology in general and gastrointestinal malignancies in particular and a proven track-record in clinical and/or correlative laboratory-based oncology research, including clinical protocol development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The final candidate should have the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be flexible and be able to motivate collaborative partners.
  • Must possess ability to work independently and effectively manage team; prior supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Prefer 1 plus years' experience in a cancer related research environment.
