General Description

College of the Sequoias Community College District is seeking a candidate who is enthusiastic about the fashion-merchandising field to fill a full time 3-year, grant funded position in the Fashion Department beginning August 2019.

Job Duties
The primary responsibility is to teach a variety of fashion courses in accordance with established course outlines and develop and expand a strong fashion program. Class assignments may include evening classes, weekend classes and teaching at any of the college locations in Visalia, Hanford and/or Tulare.

Primary job duties include:

• Provide leadership for the future development and growth of the Fashion Department.
• Assess and develop cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher order thinking skills among students through appropriate assignments and activities in one-on-one, classroom, and distance mediated instructional settings.
• Advise and instruct students regarding programs of study, other institutions of higher education, lifelong learning resources, and effective study skills.
• Refer students to support services, programs, resources, and other professionals as appropriate.
• Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations.
• Provide feedback in a timely manner to student inquiries in class, online, or during established office hours.
• Plan and organize instruction according to approved course outlines and student learning outcomes to maximize student learning in alignment with department, and District goals.
• Evaluate and select instructional materials such as textbooks, manuals, software, and tools in collaboration, as appropriate, with discipline faculty.
• Utilize the college curriculum processes to revise and update course content and materials of instruction in accordance with new theory, application, and industry developments within the education field.
• Apply for and utilize career technical educational support, resources and funding as appropriate to assist student learning and experiences in the fashion field and to maintain the fashion laboratory and equipment.
• Promote and expand work experience, internship and job opportunities for fashion students.
• Participate in department, division and campus governance and leadership activities, such as committees, task-forces, meetings and similar events.
• Develop and maintain connections with retail industry in the community, including the maintenance of an advisory board which meets regularly.
• Collaborate with high schools and other institutions to recruit students.
• Participate with college CTE processes and events.
• Maintain the fashion laboratory, including facilitating sewing machine maintenance and replacement, organization and replacement of items used occasionally (window display, production props and similar) and those used regularly (irons, fabric, thread, notions, machine accessories and similar) and maintenance of a private space for try-ons.

Participation in the governance of the District by way of committee assignments is expected. Other responsibilities include maintenance of a number of office hours, full participation in departmental responsibilities and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equality, which is respectful of diversity campus wide.


Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate must meet the following criteria.

• Any bachelor's degree or higher AND two years of professional experience OR
• Any associate degree AND six years of professional experience. The professional experience required must be directly related to the fashion discipline OR
• The equivalent AND
• Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

The Consumer Family Studies Division, Fashion Department is looking for evidence of the following:

General
Connections with the local retailers in the community
Experience in various aspects of the fashion industry in the private sector.
Willingness to travel and manage work-experience students and interns and act as a liaison with work sites.
Ability to work as a fashion merchandiser and transfer knowledge to students.
Ability to work with computers and other technologies to provide high-quality instruction.
Evidence of an ability to address the needs of a diverse and frequently under prepared student population taking a wide range of college level courses.

Service
Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
Commitment to outreach to high schools and other institutions to recruit students interested in the fashion industry.
Experience in participating and coordinating fashion shows, high school competitions and similar events.
Experience working collegially and collaboratively within the college community.
Participation in department, division, college committees and participatory governance activities.

Teaching
Community college teaching experience in the fashion area.
Ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences.
Experience with community college funding sources, especially Career Technical Education funding.
Experience teaching in a Hispanic Serving Institution and serving disproportionately impacted groups.
Ability to utilize a teaching pedagogy to enhance the learning experience of vulnerable students.
Ability to develop and maintain all fashion curriculum.
