Assistant Vice President for Campus Life & Dean of Students

Brown University, Providence, RI

Brown University’s Division of Campus Life seeks a new Assistant Vice President for Campus Life & Dean of Students as it works to realize the inclusive campus envisioned in Brown’s 2016 Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan.  https://www.brown.edu/about/administration/institutional-diversity/pathways.

Reporting directly to the Vice President for Campus Life and as a member of the senior leadership team, the Assistant Vice President & Dean of Students helps to provide leadership and strategic planning for the Division of Campus Life with a focus on student support and response.  The Assistant Vice President is a visible advocate for students (undergraduate, graduate and medical) and helps to ensure the Division and University are attuned and responsive to equity and inclusion efforts critical to supporting students.  As a member of the senior leadership team, the Assistant Vice President helps the division build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with other divisions of the University (including, but not limited to, the Dean of the College, Graduate School, Alpert Medical School, Office of the Provost and School of Professional Studies) to strengthen the student experience and foster student success.

The Assistant Vice President has responsibility for multiple departments within the division: the Campus Center and Student Activities, Residential Life, Student Support Services and Student Conduct & Community Standards.  The Assistant Vice President provides leadership and oversight for the following complex, inter-departmental and inter-divisional processes: crisis response, community building (especially focused on the residential experience) and student organization driven programming, and student development and support.  As a member of the senior leadership team, the Vice President may designate the Assistant Vice President to represent the Division of Campus Life in the absence of the Vice President, especially in moments of crisis response.  The Assistant Vice President will contribute important vision and leadership around embedding equity and inclusion in the work of the division to support students of different identities, histories, backgrounds and experience, while helping to foster inter and intra-community dialog and interaction.

Within the Ivy League formally established in 1954, Brown is unique in its open undergraduate curriculum and dual identity as a “University-College”, a model combining the advantages of both the research university and the residential liberal arts college.  Faculty members are as committed to teaching as they are to research, embracing a curriculum that requires students to be architects of their own education.  In turn, Brown students work directly with active scholars whose research ranks them at the front of their disciplines.  At Brown’s core is the idea that students are the authors of their experience inside and outside of the classroom.  The foundation of campus life at Brown is built on student self-governance.  Students are empowered and expected to create and maintain safe, healthy and respectful communities.

Qualifications:  A Master’s degree in higher education administration, human/student development or a related field is required.  A PhD in higher education or a relevant discipline, or an EdD, is preferred.  A minimum of ten years of professional experience is required, with a record of management and supervision of complex operations, preferably in multiple student-facing areas, is preferred.  Candidates should evidence active engagement with current and emerging best practices and issues in higher education and student development.  The successful candidate will be a creative thinker with the proven ability to facilitate organizational change, to improve organizational performance and to build coalitions within an academic community.  Candidates should demonstrate intercultural competence and an inclusive disposition and have a proven track record of support and advocacy for students and colleagues from diverse identities, histories, backgrounds, and experiences as well as the ability to build the capacity among colleagues to do this work.   Candidates should demonstrate experience in personnel supervision, including hiring, onboarding, mentoring and recruiting of professional staff.  Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and discretion, are essential.  Candidates should manifest adaptability, strong collaborative energy, integrity, sound judgment and the ability to make and explain difficult decisions.  Evidence of creative strategic thinking and especially examples of doing things differently will strengthen an application. The Brown community invites its members to receive each other as peers. The successful candidate will have the capacity to enhance a residential community conducive to cultivating the potential of a diverse, independent student body possessed of rare intellectual promise and creative imagination.
